Dorm daze on Cooper Square

[Dec. 13 via Robert Miner]

Workers posted the rendering for the new 13-floor dorm for East Sixth Street and Cooper Square back on Dec. 13. As Curbed noted, Marymount Manhattan College will be leasing the space.

Work quickly commenced on the former site of the historic 35 Cooper Square… and we've heard the first grumbling about the noise coming from the site… a reader expressed her annoyance on Saturday morning, when crews were out …

… and a look yesterday…

[Got boom?]

  1. Good luck, lot neighbors, your lives will be made hell for as long as at takes to get this nightmare built. I write from East 11th Street, currently construction hell, where sometimes the workers building the Spin apartments start at 4 AM...

  2. As I mentioned in another thread: I live around the corner and will be greatly inconvenienced. However, there is a bit of schadenfreude I'm allowing myself, 'cause The Standard Hotel guests and patrons of The Standard Hotel Cafe will be infinitely more inconvenienced. Once those pile-drivers start banging away, there will be a mass exodus from that place.

  3. Why in the world would a college on 70th street want a dorm on 7th street? Why don't they buy that apartment building on York that was trying to de-landmark itself because the units were "un-rentable"?

Because "colleges" are "primarily" a real-estate business. it has been so for at least the last 40 years.
