beQu now open in the former 9th St. Bakery space

beQu — for Beyond Quality — just opened on East Ninth Street... at the site of the former 9th St. Bakery.

Per the beQu website:

Our belief is simple: live beyond Quality.

With this idea, two brothers set out on a journey to bring healthy, nutritious, and great tasting foods to the people around us. We launched beQu Juice Café in the fall of 2008 on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens serving salads, sandwiches, wraps, juices, and smoothies. During our three year period on Smith Street we have developed and perfected our PurePress juice brand and decided to leave the restaurant business and focus our energy on making the best juices on the planet.

We live with the notion that a happy life is a healthy life, and a healthy life is enjoying the basic things that the earth has to offer just the way they are; untouched, unpreserved, untampered with.

A rent hike forced the bakery to close in June 2012.

  1. I try to live beyond Quality too! Right now I'm at almost Satisfactory.

  2. They'd better serve cronuts. Otherwise, they aren't going to last in this now high-rent space. And that sign is atrocious.

  3. I'd like to piss in their smoothies.

  5. I went to the BK location when it first opened several times and I like it.
The brothers are very nice, salt-of-the-earth types of guys.
It just sucks that they're in the old bakery space,

Another generic storefront that can be in the biz of pushing cell phones or juice and looks like it plans to be around for about a half hour.

  7. fuQu. Even having a quinoa juice and with the help or tactics of the biscuit boys' PR won't be able to garner a queue here. Getting queasy from that sign.

  8. Juice is the new fro-yo perhaps.

  9. If it didn't have that shiny ugly plasticky mall sign I'd give it a chance. give me an artisanal hand-carved wood sign, son.

  10. I've been on the juice train a long time (like 10+ years) and I can tell you, we do NOT need more juice joints. There are entire juice chains I refuse to even go to (e.g. Juice Press, pretentious wankers) and yet I still never feel like my juice needs (to the extent that anyone "needs" juice) aren't being adequately met.

BeQu is a terrible name, and these people are johnny-come-latelies hopping on a trend. I also give it six months.

  11. Floor to ceiling glass so transients aren't terrified what's behind a front door. If there's two things I like to do in full view of the general public it's get my hair colored and eat. ENOUGH WITH THE GLASS!

  12. Will they juice the bodies that will sooner or later burst up through the floor? They ARE organic!

  13. A plague on them, and may they close in three months or less. I don't give a damn how nice they are.

  14. How is it pronounced? BEEKWAA? What the hell kind of name is that?
