Reader report: The fire alarm goes off every morning at PS 64

From a nearby resident of the school:

The fire alarm at PS 64 at 600 E. 6th St. goes off every morning at almost exactly 6. Emergency lights flash and the alarm sounds for approximately 1 minute waking up the entire neighborhood. Reported it to 311 many times and they claim:

The Department of Environmental Protection did not observe a violation of the New York City Air/Noise Code at the time of inspection and could not issue a notice of violation. If the problem still exists, please call 311 and file a new complaint. If you are outside of New York City, please call (212) NEW-YORK (212-639-9675).

It is the most infuriating situation.

Anyone else experience this from the school?

  1. Set an alarm and record a video?

  2. YES!! I have definitely experienced this and it's so good to know I'm not crazy. Is it every single night? It wakes me up usually 2ish nights a week but I could just be fortunate enough to sleep through on the other mornings.

  3. yes! I also live on that corner and it wakes me up every single day. it doesn't just go off then, either; the alarm has been a constant source of annoyance for the past several years, but now it's getting truly ridiculous.

  4. I live on 5th Street on the cul-de-sac between Aves B & C and we get it too! I've also called 311 many times. I even wrote a letter to the school. For a while it seemed to stop, but it's back in full force again. I feel like calling 911 and saying, "Hey, the alarm at the school is going off. Someone must be breaking in. You better get over here." Maybe I should do try that every single damn morning if goes off.

  5. I actually was able to record it (don't mind the NY1 in the background, time was of the essence).

  7. YES!!! I am a student at the school tomkins square middle school which shares the same building as PS 64 (they are on the 2nd floor) and we have been hearing this a lot of fire alarms going off through this weak. They said it was some kid in PS 64 but its been like a month now, so they probably would have caught him. please write whats happening if you know because its really getting on my nerves, thank you.
