40 years of Ray

Ray's Candy Store is entering its 40th year now on Avenue A ... on the occasion, NY1 stopped by this morning for a quick segment.

Per Ray:

"I'm here, and paying top price but I love it. I want to be here forever."

Watch the segment here. [Updated: Ugh, sorry — didn't realize that Time Warner made you sign in to view. We'll see if we can get a copy another way...]

OK, here's the segment via YouTube (thanks Shawn Chittle)

  3. NY1 has updated the segment and is now longer with more narrative on Ray.

And from the original segment: "Alvarez says the key to his longevity is the friendly relationships he has developed with his customers."

An excerpt from on a post from This Recording: " When it got too hot to think, I shut my eyes for a while. When it got too hot to sleep, I slipped on my shoes, stuck three $1 bills in the waistband of the boxers I slept in, and went to Ray’s on Avenue A for frozen yogurt. “I’m going to have to order more chocolate just for you,” ancient Ray himself told me late one night, but his lopsided grin told me that he didn’t mind."

Probably gratuitous and obvious, but an Out And About profile on Ray from James Maher would be great.

Gotta love Ray and Ray's!, nonetheless....
