The Beagle, the craft cocktail bar at 162 Avenue A, closed back in October … signage arrived last week for the restaurant taking the space — Flinders Lane.
Here's a description of the restaurant via Facebook:
Flinders Lane is an Australian inspired eating and drinking house focused on offering a boutique selection of domestic and international wines, fresh seasonal cocktails and a creative small plate food selection.
After a few previews for friend and family, the restaurant opens tonight, and the owners had this to say about it on Facebook:
So this is it! We just want to say after 4 years of collaboration over late night Chinese and gimlets I'm proud to say that Monday the 3rd Feb is a red letter day - to realize a dream with a mate. A massive thank you to all that have helped us realize this dream.
There are some photos of the interior on Facebook… such as this one:
You can find their menu here.
I still miss Orologio, the Italian restaurant that occupied this spot for years. The Beagle was a yuppie disaster. I don't know what they were thinking with that menu and the prices.
ReplyDeleteTheir Facebook page says they are a restaurant, wine bar and 'social club'. Sounds like BS to me.
ReplyDeleteanything's better than the beagle! aside from the really generic "of the moment" williamsburg inspired rustic decor and "vibe", from the pics it doesn't look so bad, and at least the friends of the staff don't look like total d-bags or upper east siders!
ReplyDeleteThat interior looks like a fever dream. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteBring back OROLOGIO!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe people miss Orologio. I understand nostalgia for neighborhood changes--I feel it myself, in a lot of cases--but in the case of Orologio it is sadly misplaced. Yes, it was a nice location and it had been there forever, but the food hardly rose even to mediocre. Once some better Italian places finally opened in the neighborhood, I never set foot in the place again. Reminds me of Cafe Pick-Me-Up--still open, but I never go there, even though I appreciate it as a longtime neighborhood spot. The coffee just sucks. If places want to remain longtime neighborhood tenants, why can't they get their product up to par?
ReplyDeleteThe food at Orologio was fabulous & reasonably priced.
ReplyDeleteFood at Orologio was OK at best. The Beagle was an insult and this place and its description doesn't look any better.
ReplyDeleteI ate at Orologio at least 8 to 10 times and never had a good meal. Mediocre/average, maybe. That's it. (And the only reason I kept going back was the dearth of other offerings in the neighborhood at the time.)
ReplyDeleteI had brunch at Orologio one time and never ate there again. They charged me 4 bucks for a (not very large) iced tea, and when I asked for a refill I got charged another 4 dollars. That was it for me.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Orologio. Having said that, I think the only thing I ever ordered there was the salmon and asparagus omelet at brunch.
ReplyDeleteThe salmon pasta at Orologio was so good.
ReplyDeleteI'm blanking on this...what was here before Orologico? I have some distant memory of a furniture store? Is that possible?
ReplyDeleteFrom the the late 1980s to the mid-1990s it was a Thai restaurant called Krua Luang, which served the most flamboyant tropical drinks I've ever seen. Before that it was an empty storefront. It may have been a furniture joint in-between KL and Orologio, don't recall it being so, but it's possible.
ReplyDeleteGlad the Beagle is gone. I live across the street.
ReplyDeleteLooked at the menu for this new Flinders Lane place. I couldn't find anything I wanted to eat. Not a thing. It's all cephalopods and... rabbits.
Where's the fried kangaroos and boiled dingos to really give the foodie bloggers something to write about?
Feels bridge and tunnel. And more like a bar that serves stuff because it has to.
Anon 11:45, interesting comment. Actually, I think Pick-Me-Up and Orologio had the same owner.
ReplyDeleteI'll buck the negative tide and say that I loved the Beagle back when they still had a full menu. Loved the whimsical food/cocktail pairings. Loved the kooky little waitress. So there. (And don't bother with the bashing: I'm a longtime EV resident, neither Young or UPwardly mobile).
