Heavy snow causes scaffolding collapse on First Avenue

The scaffolding atop 175 First Ave. near East 11th Street came toppling down late this afternoon during whatever this weather is now. No word on any injuries. It wasn't clear if any workers were on the scene at the time.

According to the DOB, the city OK'd a permit for two new floors plus a penthouse atop the existing two-story building.

The complaint filed today states (in the all-cap DOB style):

NYPD REQUESTED A STRUCTURAL STABILITY INSPECTION DUE TO ASCAFFOLD COLLAPSING AT THE SECOND FLOOR DUE TO HEAVY SNOW BUILD UP

    I saw the collapse happen as I was walking south on 1st Ave one block north. The blue tarp caught a gust of wind and inflated like a sail, and the scaffolding went flying toward the street with it. Called 311 to report.

    A "penthouse"? How is what will undoubtedly be a featureless cube on the fourth floor of a building on First Avenue and East 11th Street be, in any way, shape or form a "penthouse"? The top floor of the Christadora - THAT'S a penthouse.

    A lot of times (maybe all), events such as these are blamed on the weather, when in fact it's contractors who violate the law that are to blame. That scaffolding doesn't look like it could stand on a sunny day.
