More details about the new Avenue A project from Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield

As we first reported yesterday, high-profile restaurateurs Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield are hoping to open a cafe-bar concept in the former San Loco space at 151 Avenue A.

The paperwork (PDF!) filed ahead of this month's CB3/SLA committee meeting on May 12 offers a few more details on the concept. The documents at the CB3 website show a cafe/bar with five tables seating 10-12 people, and a bar with a 7-person capacity.

Meanwhile, the proposed kitchen hours are 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. And here is the sample menu…

Although nothing on file at the CB3 website has Friedman and Bloomfield's name attached to it, multiple people have told us they are behind this project … perhaps they will even make an appearance tonight to discuss their plans with the North Avenue A Neighborhood Association…

It's also worth noting that in the past, they have gone through the process of applying for liquor licenses many times without actually committing to the spaces they were eyeing.

  1. They're stressing that they're a breakfast spot, but breakfast is going to be cookies, fruit tarts and cheesecake? I don't think so. That would surely indicate that breakfast is a ruse designed to pave the way for the main goal of lots of liquor sales. Kind of like when the bourgeois pig first opened and offered coffee and beignets for about two weeks.

  2. Would most people go here between 3-4 am to eat breakfast? This is just another bar for a particular clientele which cannot handle its liquor and lets the neighbors know about. We must stop this place from getting a liquor license. Woo

  3. The more I read about these people the more disgusted I become. They are clearly probing the hood with this application to see if there concept will fly. For sure if they open they will quickly seek a larger location. There is nothing attractive about this proposal or these people that should garner support from locals. I would like to ask the owners of San Loco to withdraw their support as they are the ones who hold the license for this location and will sell it to these two. We all supported San Loco at this location for years, it served a diverse crowd and lots of kids. Now the owners are going to just dump this on us - they don't need to do that, unless they are just looking for a nice chunk of cash. If they go ahead with this deal I"m not sure I could ever eat at another San Loco again.

  4. It's my understanding, after watching lots of Top Chef episodes, which makes me an expert, that celebrity chefs need pretty spacious digs to make their awesome food. This space is tiny and if there is even a kitchen, it must too be tiny. Plus, it's a pretty huge menu for 19 people at a time. There is no way this will anything but a cocktail lounge.
