Does anyone feel like discussing where to watch the World Cup in the East Village?
[Zum Schneider on Avenue C and East 7th Street]
Anyway, as we exclusively reported first, the World Cup kicks off today when Brazil takes on Croatia in the first of the group games.
Perhaps you may be interested in one of these games (matches?) on TV. At a bar. And seemingly every place with a TV set that you wouldn't necessarily think of to watch soccer is advertising the World Cup. (Spoiler: Nicoletta.)
We're not so big on listicles around here. So in an attempt at some kind of Open Thread Thursday (and to probably annoy esquared™), anyone want to suggest, um, suggestions for World Cup viewing in a neighborhood full of bars?
Anyone?
Please no blatant shilling.

Avenue C is for...crazy German fans

If you fave the team from Hades, then this neighborhood has some of the Hellholes to watch it from
ReplyDeleteAfter watching John Oliver's takedown of FIFA, I am not sure so I will be able to enjoy any of the matches.
ReplyDeleteCan we please have a moratorium on complaints about soccer fans? The World Cup is once every four years and the EV will survive it. Many of us look forward to it.
ReplyDelete"Can we please have a moratorium on complaints about soccer fans? The World Cup is once every four years and the EV will survive it." I will not single out soccer fans as being any better or worse than any other sports fan but the fact remains there is ALWAYS a game (pick a sport) on and there are always loud drunken sports fans roaming the streets when those games end. The day soccer changes its rules and make the game take commercial breaks like American sports it may have a shot as being a game more people watch besides ex pats from just about every other country in the world.
ReplyDeleteUgh these are such typical Grieve comments. Do you guys have to whine on every post? The point of the discussion was to highlight venues to watch the world cup.
ReplyDeleteNevada Smiths is obviously a solid spot to watch, but i'm sure it'll be packed.
I saw that Phebes has $3 Bud bottles during all games.
I haven't done much walking around this week, has anyone seen any other specials around?
I plan to watch some of the noon games during the week at Vazac's. I'm not sure if they have any specials, but I love the place when it's not the weekend nights.
ReplyDeleteAre there places to watch a particular team/nationality? Zum Schnieder might be a good place for Germany, one suspects. Others?
ReplyDeleteMe, I'm supporting WOOOstern WOOOraguay... But might like to watch some more lumpeny underdog team's matches. Where my Bosnians at? Cameroon?
Please people the word is "Futbol". Now that I have that outa the way- Anybody with Zima specials? Can I borrow a vuvuzela?
ReplyDeleteThe good news for anyone who isn't as fond of loud, drunk soccer fans as the rest of us are is that Zum Schneider will close down for a whole day on June 26th for a live broadcast and party at Solar One on 23rd and FDR Drive:
ReplyDeleteZum Schneider presents World Cup 2014 outdoors screening in NYC
12x16ft (3.5 x 5m) LED screen - German Beers - Wine - Bands - DJ's - Riverview
at the Solar One venue on the East River at 23rd St (15 min walk from Zum Schneider)
Otherwise they are having a soccer party at the restaurant every day for the next few weeks, so prepare yourselves.
Also DNA info has a whole guide to viewing parties for each countries team all over the city:
Where to Find a World Cup Viewing Party for Every Single Country
For the EV:
Japan: Milosun Sushi, East Village
141 1st Ave., 646-559-2915
This is the perfect place for sushi lovers disguised as soccer fans. Get an all-you-can-eat special for $27.95 and add $5 to make it an all-you-can-drink special. Games last 90 minutes, so you'll have plenty of time to get your money's worth at this First Avenue sushi bar.
Germany: Zum Schneider, East Village
107 Ave. C, 212-598-1098
This Avenue C beer garden is going to transform into World Cup central. They’ll be showing every game live and will replay the games at night. For the first time ever, the German restaurant is going to be serving Brazilian food to honor the World Cup host. For big games, like Germany vs. USA, they will close the restaurant and move to along the East River where they’ll have open-air screenings on a massive 11-by-18-foot LED screen and live bands.
Some other spots in the Village:
Iran: Cafe Nadery; Greenwich Village
16 W. 8th St., 212-260-5407
This Iranian cafe on 8th Street will have a pep rally brunch with live entertainment from a Persian country music band before their team takes on Argentina on June 21. They have seven beers on tap and will be selling Standard Pale Ale for $4.50 every time Iran plays.
Italy: Ribalta, Greenwich Village
48 E. 12th St., 212-777-7781
This quaint Neapolitan pizza place on 12th Street may not seem like an ideal place to watch a soccer game, but they pull down a 16-foot projector screen to host viewing parties every week. Pizza and beer specials will be on offer.
Argentina: Novecento, West Village
343 W. Broadway, 212-925-4706
This bistro on West Broadway and Grand Street installs two projectors and opens up its second floor during the World Cup. They'll be hosting a Father's Day/World Cup viewing party this Sunday. Come early, as staff say Argentine fans have been known to show up two hours before kickoff.
Costa Rica: Favela Cubana, Greenwich Village
543 LaGuardia Pl., 212-777-6500
Yes, this place is Cuban, not Costa Rican. But that doesn't keep the Costa Rica Networking Group of New York City — a small but loyal group of fans — from meeting at the venue on LaGuardia Place for every Costa Rica game.
For Camreoon you need to go uptown:
Cameroon: Harlem Tavern, Harlem
2153 Frederick Douglas Blvd., 212-866-4500
The Cameroon community in the city may be small, but if you want to root for their team you should check out this sports bar on Fredrick Douglas Boulevard. It's a great place to watch a game and many of Harlem's West African residents hang out here, according to staff at the bar.
For Uruguay: El Chivito d’Oro, Jackson Heights
8402 37th Ave., 718-424-0600
Like Argentina, Uruguay is known for their steak. The World Cup is the perfect excuse to come to this steakhouse on 37th Avenue. It's a quiet, family-friendly restaurant during the week that turns into South American soccer central in the weekends.
11th Street Bar is always good
ReplyDeleteDrop Off Service as a WC option?
ReplyDeleteAlgeria -- Nomad

Croatia -- Kafana
England -- 11th Street Bar (as Pele mentioned)

And for a brolicious times, make it a SideBar time.
me? annoyed? never. Maybe with those damn vuvuzelas.
Funny, there's a place without a TV set that is advertising the World Cup. I think there'll be putting up a screen in the wall But go figure.
Now, off to see my hepatologist.
As an Englishman I will be not be going within 50 feet of Zum Schneider.
ReplyDeleteThank you esquared™!
ReplyDeleteLunasa should have the games on. They got a bunch of new TV's a while back, so will likely have all games going at once.
ReplyDeleteAnd their sister bar Smithfield Hall just reopened on 25th St.
The new restaurant/bar Cambodge next to Zum Scheneider on Ave C will also show games
ReplyDeleteWorld Cup is not for All World footballers countries in the world but only for selected country, so we cannot call it world cup but can call it Gold Cup.
ReplyDeleteblind pig on 14th and 2nd. big soccer bar
