The Doors return to 2nd Avenue

Speaking of the Doors (blame Derek Berg for that headline!) ... the band played the Fillmore East one block to the south on March 22-23, 1968 ...

    The Fillmore East was a happening place back then.I miss those days.

    I was there for all four of those shows, second week of the Fillmore East's existence, my first gig as a rock critic. That postcard is now going for $800 on rock memorabilia sites, but I'll never in a million year sell the one my honey signed for me; for some strange reason, no poster was done for that gig, the Doors' only Fillmore East dates ever. Which was the policy for other bands to follow them; Jefferson Airplane had a lovely Egyptian-style poster and card for their May shows that same year. So in spite of personal knowledge, I have no idea why the Doors got dissed poster-wise.

    But yeah, best NYC music venue EVAH. I remember dragging Jim to an Airplane show in May of 1970, and we sat in the sound booth with Allan Ginsberg.
    Allan condescendingly thought I was some popsy Jim had picked up on Second Avenue, until I socked him with some VERY pointed and learned observations on "Airplane Dreams", which Jim had just bought at Brentano's and which we had been discussing on the way to Sixth Street. Just a typical East Village night. Fun!

    Great Pat..I was there for the late show the 1st night- with Jim climbing the PA Speakers....The Doors started multimedia on that night, using the Joshua Light Show 's gear to screen a Doors film that showed Jim being crucified!

    I saw Miles Davis at the Fillmore East in 1970 when i was 2 years old.

    Their first album was good, when Jim Morrison could still sing. After that, bleh.
