Reader report: Box truck nearly takes out pedestrians, tree on East 10th Street

From EVG reader Jose Garcia today just after noon...

We were just walking down 10th Street between A and B when this box truck, making a furniture deliver to the illegal hotel on the block, made a sudden, illegal U-turn, coming right up onto the sidewalk scaring the daylights out of us and ramming into the side of a youngish tree, scraping a bunch of bark off of it.

I started to give them the what for ... and [the delivery people] were dismissive, laughing, rude etc. I called 311, who said because it was an issue of reckless driving, transferred me to 911.

By the time the cops got there, of course, the jerks had left. The cops said because they didn’t see it they couldn’t do anything about it. With the spike of pedestrian deaths owing to out-of-control drivers in NYC, I will file a complaint with the Department of Transportation.

  1. Why can't the cops do anything when there were witnesses, and you even have photos? Glad you are pursuing it.

  4. I agree with Anonymous, what about the eyes of citizens. If you can male a citizen arrest, why can you not call out a crime as a witness. Surely the cops cannot be everywhere….isn't that why we have programs like Neighbourhood Watch? Ugggg.

  5. I'm so happy that the original poster is pursuing this issue!

I had a similar, albeit much less serious encounter the other day, when I called out a delivery cyclist for nearly running over a toddler on the sidewalk. The cyclist looked back at me and laughed as he sped off. On the sidewalk. *rage*

  6. The problem is not enough speed bumps, clearly.

  7. It looks like the truck is licensed by the Department of Transportation so try reporting the incident to them with photos if you haven't already. Good luck! Let us know if you get anywhere. The driver should be fired for his flippant attitude and poor driving skills.
