Despite a few (OK, a lot of) record store closings in recent years ... there are still several excellent places to buy music around here... Gothamist dropped their "12 best" yesterday ... and the East Village was well represented...
• Other Music, 15 E. Fourth St. between Lafayette and Broadway
• Turntable Lab, 120 E. Seventh St. between Avenue A and First Avenue
• Academy Records, 2 W. 18th St. between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue ... not to mention their sort of (right?) affiliated location at 415 E. 12th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue
• A1 Records, 439 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and First Avenue
As Gothamist noted, "Every record store in this city deserves a shoutout for surviving this long."
Indeed, so here's also a shoutout to Good Records NYC at 218 E. Fifth St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square.
Second Hand Rose is pretty fantastic on 12ths st. They have anything and everything you could look for and usually in great condition. Their prices are higher, but you paying for a great quality record.

ReplyDeleteWith the very few remaining record stores in NYC, why would Gothamshit only concentrate on those twelve record stores? I say ALL surviving record stores are THE best.
Housing Works thrift shops also sell records.
Also, Amoeba Music, a West Coast institution, is selling exclusive vinyl releases at the Urban Outfitters in Herald Square.
And in October, J&R music will be doing similar joint venture with Century 21, where they will open as a boutique in the basement of Century 21 selling from computer merchandises to music including vinyl records.

@3:32pm RECORD STORES, not thrift shops (Housing Works), clothing stores (Urban Outfitters), or department stores (Century 21) selling records. 'Cool that these places sell records but they are not record stores.

Downtown music gallery opened in 1991 and has been continuously opened since then . Now in its 3rd location near Chinatowm in the "two bridges" neighborhood
