yes, I heard this walking home today.
ReplyDeleteShe was soooo good at afflicting the comfortable. It's hard to explain to younger folks today how much of a ballbuster she and others like Phyllis Diller, Moms Mabely, Totie Fields, etc., were in their day. Although things were culturally bubbling under here in the Village in the 40s, 50s and early 60s, mainstream America was generally repressive and hung-up.....quite dark for a great deal of the population. These female comedians made whole generations rethink their positions on MANY subjects, and Joan was right here in the Village striking blows against the Empire.
ReplyDeleteAnd in the end......WOTTA A DAME!
