Reader report: Pizza Bagel Cafe yielding to a T-Mobil store on 14th and 1st

The Pizza Bagel Cafe on the southeast corner of First Avenue and 14th Street closed without much warning last Monday.

Now a tipster tells us that a T-Mobile store is taking over the space — with a rent of $56,000. A month.

The space hit the market back in February.

So you'll have to head north a few blocks to find more bagels (David's, Bagel Boss, Ess-a-Bagel) or another T-Mobile shop (at East 19th Street in the Stuy Town commercial strip).

  1. Too bad! I was hoping the Greek restaurant Taverna Kyclades next door would expand into the space. I love eating there, but there is always a wait, and the place is so crowded and loud.

  2. I *think* the T-Mobile in the StuyTown strip is closing...walked by there last night and there was only a few things on the wall. Either they are doing MAD inventory or the store is shutting down.

  3. Just a note to mourn David's Bagel, which used to be in that building until it was pushed out by the landlord to make way for Hot and Crusty, now closed and formerly of that space.

  5. David Bagel = my neighborhood go to. $56,000.? That's a very busy corner with no room for people to stop. Should be interesting...(boring). Hopefully, the school kids won't be hanging out there anymore, which will give the rest of us more room on that corner. We're just there to cross the street/ave. Ha!

$56,000/month. Legislation to protect small businesses has been languishing in City Council Committee since forever. Bloomberg and Quinn are gone so now what's the excuse?

  7. @Ken - it's called lobbyists and developers giving money to City Council members and other local politicos to look the other way while they continue their wholesale rape of New York. There was an interview on WNYC last night with a guy who ran in CA for some small elected office; he said that despite his best intentions, once he won, 90% of his time was spent fundraising for his next election. There's no time to waste on things like small business protection when there's fundraising to do.

  8. There is no excuse, Ken from the kitchen, we are too busy working to stay afloat in our city to do jack.

  9. $56K/moth??? How are any small businesses expected to compete with that? Totally insane.
