  1. Again, again, again. Why are the people who organize this horror, why are they allowed to remain anonymous?

  2. Santacon is painfully dorky….

  3. Other SanatCons are using an app called NowMap to plan their routes, it looks like London already used it for theirs already. I downloaded the app, guess where NYCs SantaCon is listed on the map? The 13th Step. Get ready EV it looks like we are in the bullseye again.

Here's a link to the app in case you want to plan for the worst day of the year: http://goo.gl/M5xTK0

  4. They can tell them not to 'scrooge it up' all they want. It's not a friendly event and is unwanted by the community. WTF? Forget it people. Take it somewhere else.

  5. These dirtbags say this same etiquette crap EVERY YEAR. Not to mention, what kind of fucking adults need to be told NOT to stagger around, vomiting and pissing all over a neighborhood, not to fight or destroy things? Answer: Packs of self-entitled assholes who basically get away with such behavior. You know, the so-called "hooligans" (as opposed to "thugs"). The pumpkin rioters, the douchebros who set their town on fire when their fucking football team lost (or won). This is really not the year for exhibiting how your privileged asses get away with things that would get certain other groups of people shot or choked to death.

    Someone OUT these degenerates already!

  6. Of course it's going to be in the LES, did anyone doubt it for a second.

  7. The 13th Step has to be involved somehow. They are always ground zero for this drunken shit show.

  8. @10:32pm: Given the massive police presence lately in the E. Village re: protests for Ferguson & Garner, it will be VERY interesting to see how much crap the drunkards get away with this year.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I am very heartened by this. It's definitely a step in the right direction. I think we should give them a chance, and not just dismiss their efforts.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Why is it aways a day before this "charitable" event that they announce where it'll be?

I'd like to see the protesters protest at the same time on Saturday and have "die-ins" during this humanitarian event and see how the Santaconners and NYPD respond.

  11. 7:54, simply saying you are going to do something is not "effort." They say this same "behave yourselves" bullshit every year, and every year they act like blackout-level animals. With all due respect, don't be naive.

11:52, rumors have purported that Santacon is heavily participated by off-duty cops. So yes, it will be very interesting to see if the giant police presence currently in the EV affects them this weekend. If it's business as usual, at least we'll finally have an answer about who runs this shitshow.

  12. We started Santa con. Mrs clause rounding up her elves. Support the same places you always go for merriment, every Santa con. Have fun.

  13. Re 9:03, It looks like Santa's been dipping into the egg nog a little early.

  14. The police officers I know socially DESPISE Santacon and the idiots who participate. They would love to shut the whole thing down, and yet somehow it persists.

  15. Oh come on now. It's not that bad. Remember the days when the EV had real drunks who didn't need to wear costumes? Well, buck up, scouts, it's only a day -- and depending on the weather can be quite pleasant, especially with the elves and reined dears afoot, hiccup.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @10:09 AM Actually, it IS that bad. And it gets worse each year which is why the police, politicians, community boards, neighborhoods, neighborhood bars, and even the media, who were also all 'oh, it ain't so bad', have turned on Santacon. It is that bad.

If you knew ANYTHING about the neighborhood, you'd know this frat culture of walking around in packs, in costumes, and getting blackout drunk while making a complete ass of yourself never existed in the EV until the late 2000s. Drugs? Sure. But people bought them and brought them home. They didn't walk around in a mob of 30,000 assholes, concealing their identities, and destroying property.

As I've said many times, of all the things people could take a stand for these days, Santacon is not one of them. Do you really need a special day to get extra black out drunk?! I thought your type calls those weekends.

  17. How can the people who run such a large public event remain anonymous and not be required to coordinate the massive influx of people into city neighborhoods with local officials and police? I would love to see the cops crack down on the public drunkenness, the lewd behavior and the harassment this year.

The organizers should advise against public handjobs too.

Last year I saw a santa girl attempting an over the clothes drunken handjob on a santa in the window of CVS on 1st ave just north of 14th St. They were kind of behind a display so the people in the store couldn't see them. They were either indifferent or oblivious to people on the street, though.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wonder how the police would respond if this event became more ethnically diverse and wasn't all white people. What do you think?

  20. A special holiday message from the anonymous leaders at top-secret SantaCon Headquarters:

In honor of the recent protests against police violence, this year SantaCon is introducing a brand new tagline and chant designed to address all community concerns:

    Hands Up. Don't Puke!

Drunk Santas, half-naked elves, naughty Mrs. Santas and their happy hand-job helpers are urged to use this chant as they weave and stumble from bar to bar while carrying our pre-printed signs that say "Drunk Lives Matter."

To get you psyched up and ready to stumble, here's a recap of last year's SantaCon including the infamous Duane Reade hand-job on 14th St. and 3rd Ave.

    Just Remember, No means Ho!

  21. You know what would stop this all from happening this weekend, plan an Ferguson/Garner protest that route is down A, up 1st, down, 2nd and back up 3rd.

That will shut the santa down!

  22. Guys, this is the only time the insecure invalid impotent creeps can get a booty call by inebriating their prey while hiding behind Santa's mask.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous 8:54 - I don't think it's naive to think they'll rein themselves in. This is the first time they've been under such heavy fire. It's also the first time they're putting out warnings to the Santas.

I think they should be given the chance to prove themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Every year, they are given a chance to prove themselves, to no avail.

    ReplyDelete
  25. And they'll be given yet another chance this Saturday ...

BTW 1:41 they were under heavy fire last year (you can look it up yourself on this very site), and Santacon PTB sent out "warnings" to their participants last year as well. Look it up. As regards the 2013 instructions to Santas, I'm again wondering what kind of grown-ass, responsible person needs to be told "No means no." (Answer: blackout date-raping drunks)

    Once more:

    tweets ≠ efforts

  26. Ken from Ken's KitchenDecember 9, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Sure 1:41 PM. And I'll bet a lot of them will be cognizant of their behavior as per the organizer's tweets. At least until the fifth drink in an hour or so.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Maybe if locals were more welcoming, the situation would turn around. The organizers are doing their part, we should do our part too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 5:36, You keep saying this: "doing their part," "step in the right direction," "don't dismiss their efforts," etc., but Santacon runners haven't actually DONE anything. What "part" are organizers doing? What efforts are we dismissing? They just sent out a bunch of tweets.

I'm sure if the 2014 Santaconners turn out to be basically well-behaved (other than some drunk but harmless wooo!ing) we'll be the first to come back here and say Hey, they really shaped up this year, good on them.

Until that happens however, people are understandably wary, and your defensiveness just makes it seem like you're participating and are grumpy because Santacon is being criticized.

  29. "Maybe if locals were more welcoming, the situation would turn around. The organizers are doing their part, we should do our part too. "

Oh, this is such a fucking load of shit. It's beyond the pale. I can't wait to see you unload from a cab on 12/16 around 2 PM in the EV. "The horror! The horror!” Who's this, EV Today?

    ReplyDelete
  30. "Maybe if locals were more welcoming, the situation would turn around." That's what they said to the Native Americans when the newcomers arrived, and look how that worked out for the locals.

And please don't call us "locals." This ain't Podunk USA, and you are not in any way cool enough or superior enough to be looking down on anyone in the EV and call them "locals." The very use of this term means you know that both you and these SantaConners are all outsiders.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Correction, I meant 12/13. And remember this?

  32. 5:36 pm = Don Lemon reporting.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous 6:21, I don't think I'm being defensive. By the way, I won't be participating -- it's not really my thing.

Regarding referring people who live here as locals, it's a name we all use all the time. There's nothing offensive about it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Exactly what Giovanni said re: "locals." Some words just jump out and scream "clueless."

To be clear, this was once a neighborhood and the people who lived here were called residents. They were New Yorkers. (Remember those?) They lived here, they weren't suburbanites in their 20s and 30s camping out. "Locals" -- grrrr.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous 10:24, I look forward to your ire the next time EV Grieve uses the term, or nygrump, or bowboy, or any of the anonymouses, or the anti-AirBnB sign maker, etc.

    "Locals" used on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  36. How can you have local businesses without locals? How can you shop local?
