Several readers noted that the Red Mango on Second Avenue just below East Fourth Street had been closed in recent weeks. Winter hiatus?
The ownership confirmed to us that this location has permanently closed.
Red Mango just opened here in February, which may not have been the best time to open a FroYo shop…
A Red Mango also came and went pretty quickly on St. Mark's Place back in 2008.
Meanwhile, directly next door, Gelato Ti Amo, which was part of an international Tuscany-based chain, has also permanently closed. Workers were cleaning out the 2-year-old space last night.
Perhaps there are enough dessert choices in the neighborhood?

ReplyDeleteThe wonder is that they stayed open as long as they did. I walked by earlier this morning, and a worker clearing out the Red Mango place said that the gelato store next door is relocating to Long Island.
ReplyDeleteThe DF Mavens company told me a couple months ago that they would be open before the end of the year. I'll believe it when I have a cold dead cone in my hand.
Ti Amo Gelato was great. Sigh.

Go to Fresco! Family-run business, very nice and community-minded folks. Fair prices and yummy food and gelato.
ReplyDeleteRed Mango, Pinkberry, froyo and dessert shops, belong in a mall. But the neighborhood and NYC have been turned into a mall.
ReplyDeleteThat gelato place was great and everyone who worked there was very nice. In the summers, they were often open until midnight. It was fun to sit at a sidewalk table, quite late-ish, while having one of their delicious treats. I am a fan and am sorry to see it go.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Mango location took what seemed like nearly 2 years to open. It was so strange. Once it did, I knew it would not survive. That whole thing had peaked, and sure enough the place was always empty. Why would anyone want that trash when you had authentic and delicious gelato next door.
tried a something or other from red mango. it tasted like a cheap lollipop . good riddance.
ReplyDeletethe gelato shop was indeed superb. too bad it didn't make it. hard to pay 12 months of rent for 6 months of business. thy'd have done well to add something more cold weather friendly.
