[Updated] Bowery Coffee is closing for good after today



A tipster let us know that Bowery Coffee at 87 E. Houston just west of the Bowery closes for good after business today.

We haven't heard any reasons why. Their Instragram account simply notes, "Come say goodbye to your favorite baristas because we'll miss you too!"

Bowery Coffee opened in October 2011.

BoweryBoogie has more today on the situation here... to no surprise, the landlord apparently refused to renew the shop's lease.

    Well, damn. They ranked #1 on my personal list of best-tasting coffee in the area. Sad to see them go.

    Like most of the establishments in this area, it was empty most of the time. Just another in a long line of temporary retailers. It's no wonder that today we have a concept called "pop-ups".

    Let's face it, many small business owners, while they known the financial implications of opening a business (rent, salaries, insurance, cost of materials, etc.), many have fantasies about how they will be different when it comes to meeting monthly costs. Always sad to see a small business close and people lose jobs.

    I like larger sun-light filled cafes, such as The Bean. My favorite was the NY Film Academy Café (April 15, 2010-June 30, 2011), RIP, at 51 Astor Place, now a large commercial building. Not for the coffee/tea, but for the venue itself and its view of the street from two sides. Sarah was the manager there, and went to Bowery Coffee for a year as a barista.
    I went over to Bowery Coffee this afternoon, but it was packed.

    I find the problem with these otherwise lovely little coffee bars, and so many other establishments in the city, is that they are so damn small. (thank you, astronmical per sq ft real-estate prices) Just too mashed with people, and nowhere to set down your cup.

    Back in 1981 I used to buy 1960's, Italian vintage "mod" pointy shoes with asymmetrical lace-ups in this storefront.
