Sunrise where the Domino Sugar Refinery stood for nearly 135 years



EVG reader Daniel Root was walking in East River Park Saturday morning.

"Afterward I was thinking how I had never seen that sunrise [there] before and it occurred to me that the reason I hadn’t seen it is the now demolished and missed Domino Sugar Refinery was in that gap."

Indeed...

The demolition of the circa-1880s building with the iconic Domino sign was complete in late December.

Some day the whole mega-project will look like...

    In a city full of ever-more-ludicrous "architecture", that one takes the Domino sugar-laden cake. A more stupid and meaningless design could not have been conceived of, and yet in it goes, already dated. Utterly shameful.

    Yeah. You seriously would think it's a "joke" rendering, but alas…
    I guess this what we get from architects raised on a diet of SimCity and crappy sci-fi games?

    i am sure that EVG will be the first to post the first photo of a sun or moon rise or set, as seen through that sugar block shaped opening in that building.

    It's a shame that NYC and the real estate developers aren't interested in preserving any of the city's history or character. In 100 years, no one is going to look back at these buildings the way we do with Grand Central Terminal, the Woolworth Building, etc.

    I read somewhere that these designs were rejected. The building that bridges itself may be the ugliest thing ever.

    What are y'all talking about? The refinery was given landmark status in 07. They didn't tear it down, they're going to turn it into residential condos. The building itself will stay.
