At the Tompkins Square Greenmarket today
Just two vendors — Meredith's Bread and Pura Vida Fish — are braving the wind chills today. Also, from the Greenmarket folks: "Sangmin from the compost team will be here til 1 to collect your food scraps, but there is NO textile recycling today."

Do people really save their food scraps all week to drop off here on Sundays?
ReplyDeleteSome of us, do, yes, or at the garden on the corner of 12th and B, where there is a dedicated garbage can just for food scraps available 24/7 for dropping off. So?
ReplyDeleteyes, I just dropped off and the barrel was getting full. You can also also drop off at Houston and 1st ave weekday mornings. Keeping compost in your house isn't all that strange, actually. If you keep your trash in your closed kitchen garbage can for days it's really just the same thing, just in a separate can.

ReplyDeleteYes, people do. I sometimes drop off mid-week at the Union Sq greenmarket if I'm walking / biking in that direction. It's surprisingly easy to just keep the scraps in the freezer (sometimes fridge if we run out of space in the freezer).
ReplyDeleteEasiest thing to do is put scraps in a plastic bag in the freezer. There is no smell and a full freezer is an efficient freezer.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I take my compost every week—I've been doing it for almost as long as I've lived in this apartment—to the Lower East Side Ecology Center garden on 7th between B and C. Can be a bummer when I have a full bucket in the middle of the week, but LESEC has a setup at Union Square whenever the market is open.
ReplyDeleteGood to know a full freezer is an efficient freezer; mine is always crammed with stuff. If you use a compost bucket with an airtight lid, that works too.
