  2. EV Grieve has better coverage than all the traditional news outlets combined. Look forward to your continued updates in the coming days (long after this ceases to be "headline" news on tv). Well done.

  3. Holy shit, so the first building fell, then the back of the one next to it, then the side of the building on the corner?!

  7. I live on St. Marks [between the two pizza shops]and living in the rear of my building its heartbreaking seeing peoples homes just burn and then fall apart... luckily its still only *things* and loss of life/injuries are minimum compared if this had happened at night when most would be asleep.

    Incredible that six buildings are basically trashed and lives turned upside down because someone didn't righty tighty hard enough or stuck a shovel in the wrong place in the ground.

  8. Thank you EV Grieve. I no longer live in the neighborhood but it was my home for 16 years. I've been gone for a year but I still read you every day. My heart aches for everyone affected by this tragedy, and I thank you for your amazing coverage. You were the first place I looked after hearing of this awful news.

  10. Some questions need to be asked about the Explosion today in the East Village. If Con Ed was at the building not long before it blew up and refused to sign off on the gas and electrical work being done and gave it an F then that says to me that whoever the landord hired to do the work was not qualified, incompetent and didn't know what the F they were doing. Were they even licensed to do it ? Why didn't Con Ed shut it down at that point and call in their people to do emergency repairs ? Something is fishy here and sooner or later I hope we find out what really happened.

  11. I must commend Shut Up Hooker for her brave work following the explosion today. While many ohers rushed to save lives and assist the injured SUH was helping by posting comments here and in the NY Times wow she is a real hero.

  12. It's not Con Ed, it's Con Dead.

    This one stinks. Con Dead's "inspectors" were apparently more concerned with having enough space to install the new meters in the building that blew up -- so they could send everyone the correct bills -- than by the fact that the new gas pipe installation had failed.

    So why was the gas still on? Con Dead claimed that the lock on the gas pipe had been turned off, but that cannot be true since the restaurant uses gas to cook and the gas was still escaping through these newly installed pipes.

    Con Dead claimed there were no reports of a gas leak, but some residents reported smelling gas and seeing Con Dead inspectors looking for gas leaks just days before.

    History will not remember them kindly: recall the steam pipe explosion in Gramercy Park that killed 3 people and spewed asbestos all over nearby buildings, for which Con Dead was later fined and convicted of covering up. Remember Jodie Lane, who was electrocuted by stray voltage while walking her dog outside Veniero's. Perhaps their worst disaster of all was when eight people Harlem were killed when their building blew up last year. Now a young man who was eating in Sushi Park is missing.

    Remember this every time you walk by one of their trucks on the street doing repairs: it's not Con Ed, it's Con Dead. Then don't walk, run.

  15. John Peenley;
    I don't know what your fucking problem is, in case you didn't notice I posted at 1:09am so there wasn't much for anyone to have done at that time; and when this happened by the time I got outside to see what had happened the buildings were already on fire.
    Never posted on NYT and I know having grown up in this nabe I'm more of a man than you'll ever be.
    Seriously dude, grow up
