The rent is negotiable for the 2,100-square-foot space between East Fifth Street and East Sixth Street (there's also a 1,100-square-foot basement) … the date available is February 2015.
every time a bar closes nearby I get 10 minutes more sleep per night.

ReplyDeleteI have to admit I never went in because of the name - places that substitute 'K' for 'C' or 'Q' get my bristles up. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteReally love this place. They have some of the best free comedy in the city on thursday night and cheap drinks.
ReplyDelete@11:35 - It was a little too loud for my taste. The surfaces are all hard and amplify the sound, making conversation quite difficult. That said, you could get 2 for 1 drinks until 8 PM. And they had a separate room for private parties, which was quite nice. The bartenders were all very nice.
ReplyDeleteI loved that place when it was the original 'Nightbirds'. They occasionally had live music on Sunday afternoons. Saw some pretty good musicians playing there. It also was popular with cops from the 9th Precinct. who'd patronize the bar after work. They always stayed open very late, till daylight. If you knew the knock, you could get in . The Kabin's security people were quite strict and there was no hollering and woo-hooing outside the bar. Kinda sorry to see it close.

ReplyDeleteKabin is not a bad place. I don't care for the TVs they put in with sports always on but it still have a divey feel to it. Saw a lot of good comedy in that backroom and it was free. Cheap booze too. Also, several mars bar regulars are always there. Now they are assed out again. Lots of old neighborhood people are in there during the day reading or just hanging out with the door open. Sucks. Sorry to see it go. What's next?
ReplyDeleteIt is really nice to read through these comments and see that so many people had great experiences at Kabin. I got my DJ start there back when it first opened (after Black Star) and I played in that back room on Saturday nights for two and a half years. I saw some wild parties come through that room and on those couches and I will never forget wheeling two crates of records to and from the bar (and up five flights of stairs) each and every Saturday. Best of luck to Kal and the gang in their future endeavors.

ReplyDeleteMy scooter club The Checkered Demons used to go there in the late 80s. It was so small we couldn't all fit if anyone else was there so we'd put five dollars in the jukebox and play Mr. Brownstone until the place cleared out then the bartender would unplug it. We tipped well.
