wait, that group only tagged you, rt, Grievey? Rt? anyway, it makes me feel more dirty than using a Starbucks bathroom in a different city when I really have to go. I officially give up.
I'd really like to say this is shocking but sadly it's not...anything for people to somehow insert themselves in whatever way they can overriding all common decency...
I don't see anything wrong with their taking a picture of themselves with emergency vehicles behind them. If they're all in it, at that angle, there won't be much of the background in the picture.
Walking through a crowd, the village is aglow Buildings crashing down, wow there's so much smoke All the EMS is getting in my way Searching for people they're never going to save
Welcome to a leveled block It's been waiting for you Welcome to a leveled block Welcome to a leveled block Welcome to a leveled block It's been waiting for you
It's a siren, I might choke I can't shop in all this smoke Forevermore The fire is so bright But they never blind me, me Welcome to a leveled block It's been waiting for you Welcome to a leveled block Welcome to a leveled block It's been waiting for you
Couldn't get a picture of them, but there were people posing on top of a building across the street with rubble as the background. And there may be 2 dead men in that pile. Not all the pix are horrible, but some are just ridiculously hateful. Like this.
I think the smiling is what people have a problem with, and rightly so.... and the background is totally what that pic is about. Their shitty attitude is it didn't happen to me, so what: the same reason you see people recording this on their phones instead of at the very least helping by not being in the way of emergency personnel . Youth is wasted on the young.
Really? stop talking about gentrification and start talking about a generation that lacks compassion, an era of the "selfie" and the little stick it rode in on.
this neighborhood will stick together and help those in need and as it has in the past survive and rebuild with the help of their community.
It doesn't matter. It's the idea of it that is in poor taste. What is there to photograph? There is nothing to document here other than I WAS THERE. People have completely lost their minds. Two people are still missing. More than two dozen people were injured and hundreds of others have been displaced and these tourists can think of nothing but taking pictures of themselves. That's a big problem with the EV now — too much I WAS THERE and not enough neighborhood. Have a little decency, a little respect.
This happened, as well, the day after Sandy. The good thing, though, was that soon the phones died, couldn't be recharged due to lack of electricity, and all that nonsense stopped.
Can you imagine if selfie sticks had been around on 9/11/2001?
These people need to get a life - they THINK they have one, but they don't. I can't fathom the mind-set of those who need to document themselves (and the food they order in restaurants) at every possible moment, as if to prove to themselves that they exist. Truly pathetic.
I am incredulous. I am hoping one of the big media outlets gets their hands on this photo and these women are identified and asked to explain their behavior.
Unbelievable. These laughing, tedious, thoughtlessly cruel young women are empty in the head and the heart. Please EventPhotosNYC, go away and stay away.
@EventPhotosNYC didn't take the selfie, she just documented the girls taking the selfie of themselves and posted it to Twitter as well as other photos after the explosion, so don't blame the messenger.
Whether the girls who took the selfie posted it to facebook or Instagram is the question. Assuming they have any brain cells inside those cute little heads we can hope they did not. See EventPhotosNYC coverage on Flickr here.
I'm not seeing kids or girls here, I'm seeing women well into their twenties at least, which means they are old enough to know better. This revolting act of self-absorption is made about 100x worse by the smiling. It's clear they don't care about the suffering of others but they're also so foolish, they could very well lose their jobs and be socially ostracized for years for this moment of heartless stupidity.
When I first came to the US (mid-2002?), I remember visiting the WTC site, when it was still a massive mess and people were able to view the gaping hole in the ground through a fence. My strongest memory of the place is a family of tourists taking a grinning photo in front of the fence. I often thought back to that moment in embarrassment of what the human race has become.
I don't understand some people. The photo and selfie culture really exposes some nasty features many of us have. I hope this photo comes to the attention of the women in it and they use this as an opportunity to do some MUCH needed reflection on their values.
If one of their friends or loved ones happened to be in the rumble or had lost their homes, the tone would be different. The problem with this generation is immediate gratification, taking no responsibility for your actions or words, having a good time, marinating in entitlement, oblivious to what is truly happening around them. It might sound like a generalization, but a majority of younger people I know and see in the world hold no notions of depravity and loss. I hope these young women come forward and apologize for glorifying a devastating, unspeakable tragedy. Their parents should be ashamed of them.
Why are invoking their parents? Honestly, there is no indication that they are teenagers who may still need to develop reasoning skills and impulse control. These jerkwads could be 30 for all we know, they certainly aren't dressed all that youthfully.
I want to punch a wall every time I view this photo but these are not children, they are grown-ass people, and who cares if they disappointed their parents. They have disappointed humanity.
Can we ignore these ridiculous fuckwads for a second and focus on ALL the pedestrians who ran TOWARDS the scene to help? Watch the videos. Sure, these "selfie" assholes exist; but let's toss the ire and praise those real New Yorkers who are ready, willing, and able to assist. There were more East Villagers managing the crisis than bathing in its flashing lights. No, for a moment, no hating here. I love my city and I love my village.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in the EV have become stomping grounds for these clowns. I, too, was young once and did some dumb stuff every now and then. But it would never occur to me to walk down a residential street hollering and woo-hooing at 3 AM. But that was long before the advent of digital cameras and I-Phones. Just my 2 cents, as always.
Channel 11 news just ran a "selfie-shaming" segment about the inordinate number of morons taking photos of themselves and the destruction, and the last image they showed was this one. Let's hope these bitches get called out by name so we can all know precisely who to loathe.
Sadly, and I apologize to those in advance for my comment, but this embodies much of what is wrong with NYC and the seemingly countless White girls (yes, I said it -- it's the truth), entirely depraved of anything fulfilling and or any culture, and so absorbed in themselves. I see this type of stuff nearly daily and sadly, multiple times through out the day. I'm really sorry for those women not like them, but you and I know this is in fact at epidemic levels in this city and with young, well healed women. My neighborhood of 20 years has been overrun by a bunch of morons.
" I never thought I'd say this but...trust no one under 30. Or most people under 30.
Then again when you were born in the '90s the most vapid decade in American history what do you expect from these products of it?"
These women could very well be over 30 for all you know. And other commenters have said they saw people doing the same thing during 9/11, with one person pointing out that the assholes in question were middle-aged women. So don't try to make this a generational thing. There are selfish assholes in every generation of every age group. The only difference is that today's technology allows people to more easily broadcast their asshattery to the world but I can guarantee you that if smartphones had been around as long as we have, we'd have a collection of pictures of people taking selfies at the site of history's most infamous tragedies.
Who cares. Did they use the best judgement? To them it didn't matter. The more is see these hypersensitive attitudes, the more this country gets weaker. The only thing the takers of the picture did wrong was publicly post it. If they were shooting for negative reaction, they succeeded.
Your remarks and lively debates are welcome, whether supportive or critical of the views herein. Your articulate, well-informed remarks that are relevant to an article are welcome.

If you'd like to make personal attacks and libelous claims against people and businesses, then you may do so on your own social media accounts. Also, comments predicting when a new business will close ("I give it six weeks") will not be approved.
Unreal, the depravity.
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to shove that selfie stick up their collective asses...
ReplyDeleteEveryone over there with a camera is a vulture, even the one who took this photo.
ReplyDeletenominees for assholes of the year. sucks to be them.

ReplyDeleteI hope these jerks are tourists, if they live here I'm moving out.
ReplyDeleteWTF?! No respect. Is that seriously a selfie stick and smiling a-holes in front of a tragedy?

ReplyDeleteClassy bunch of ladies, I'm sure their parent are very proud of their daughters...
ReplyDelete#poortaste #disrespect #wtf
ReplyDeleteI am not well-versed in Twitterage. Does that photo mean EventPhotosNYC took that picture of the girls? Do we know who the ladies might be?
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable. These laughing, tedious, thoughtlessly cruel young women are empty in the head and the heart. Please EventPhotosNYC, go away and stay away.
ReplyDeleteFucking disgusting humans.
ReplyDeleteThis is simply distasteful and disrespectful. This is not a time to be taking selfies and making light of the situation. Stupid kids.
ReplyDeleteFucking losers, but why didn't/did anyone call them out, ideally on YouTube?
ReplyDeleteSo heartless...I hope at least one of them is identified and called out by name.

ReplyDeleteUtter self-absorbtion. Zero compassion.
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing that out Giovanni. My bad and apologies to EventPhotosNYC.
ReplyDeleteA warning to Generation Selfie: This is why you should never take a selfie in front of a fire.

...a new low.
ReplyDelete"Generation iDiot"...
ReplyDeleteRepulsive self-absorbed cretins
these are exactly the people who will be moving into the new high-end building that will go up on the ruins.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet their parents are really proud. too the above poster: sadly you're probably right.
ReplyDeleteLook at me, I'm making it in the gritty East Village with my posse of 'fierce bitches'. I'm a city girl now, YAY!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope they rot in hipster hell
ReplyDeleteI would not call them "hipsters." This seems like a far more vacuous and pernicious species.
ReplyDeleteIf one of their friends or loved ones happened to be in the rumble or had lost their homes, the tone would be different. 10:31 does that include news photographers and all the people who provided photo coverage for this blog?
ReplyDeleteAll the single ladies ... all the single ladies ... quick boys, man up and wife up. Who could resist this display of the fairer sex's fabled empathy?
ReplyDeleteHipsters? There's nothing hip about their TJ Maxx mom motif.
ReplyDeleteI still want to believe this was Photahopped.
ReplyDeleteStupid women/girls? They must have shit for brains. If I was their relative and came across it, I would be embarrassed to know them.
