With what we know about how NYPD works the numbers, they could just be reporting more honestly now. Or making stuff up to make things look worse.
ReplyDelete84% of those shoot this year had extensive criminal records. Seems it points to gang violence. The tourist and average new yorkers have no more to fear than usual, just don't get caught in the crossfire.
ReplyDeleteThere was a nice Arthur Russel read in last weeks Time Out New York. It mapped some of his haunts and was cool to see he was Allen Ginsburg's neighbor in the same bldg on 12th st between 1st and A.
ReplyDeleteEven if it's predominantly related to "gang violence" the increase in serious crime does not happen in a vacuum...it especially affects "the average New Yorkers" who are simply trying to live their lives in whatever neighborhood but particularly those riddled with higher rates of violence (e.g. NYCHA in the EV and NYCHA overall as well as East New York, Brownsville, East Flatbush). So unfortunately, not getting caught in the crossfire is far easier said than done for some these average New Yorkers.

ReplyDeleteOne man's crime is another man's desperate plea for justice and understanding after centuries of class and racial oppression. This uptick in a crime is really just small price to pay for a more equitable, vibrant, and diverse future.
