Keeping The Bowery Mission in mind this summer

An EVG reader passes along the following reminder about The Bowery Mission...

This is the time of year when the clients need t-shirts/socks/underwear to deal with the summer heat. Generally large or xl on the t-shirts and underwear.

Also, this is generally the time of year when they really need volunteers.

Everyone wants to volunteer around the holidays and they literally have volunteers standing around because there are too many of them. Hunger and homelessness is a 24/7/365 condition. It doesn't end after the holidays. This is the time of year when they can use the help.

Here's the link if you are interested in making a donation ... anything from cash, food to clothes.

The Bowery Mission, which has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since 1879, is at 227 Bowery near Prince.

  2. YES! I was working at a resturaunt near the mission. I've been here 35 years and know how important this is to many men woman and children. The people that have bought the 8.5 million apartments around there complain about it and would love to see it moved. Well now I'm leaving NYC, as I go through my clothing I make a bag for the mission. I feel the best part is I worked in fashion so I have brought 4 big bags of high end fashion. I can't wait to see the face of the rich seeing the clients in comme des Garconnes & Prada. I'll always do what I can to keep the mission going, even from far away.

  3. Lady GaGa is leaving NYC?

Seriously....thanks Anon@9:29....I'll bet there's quite a few folks who didn't think of, or think much of, the Bowery Mission when they lived in the neighborhood.....but when they left they discovered that it was a big part of the heart they left behind.

  5. Thanks for posting this. I sent it in because summer is just as bad as winter for the clients. People think because its warm its easier than winter. Its not. There is nothing easy about the day to day struggle these people face both physically and psychologically. As one client said- there are no holidays when youre on the street. Everyday is a struggle 24/7. The city shelters are violent chaotic and filled with predatory criminals and thieves.
Also cases of bottled water are also a good donation. The clients can keep and refill the bottles to stay hydrated. Maintaining ones grooming/hygiene and maintaining ones sanity/self respect is difficult for these folks. It seems basic to most- but wear the same tshirt/socks/undies for a couple days during the heat. Its horrible. Thanks for posting this. Thanks to all who help.

  6. Didn't the Bowery Mission used to be on 3rd Street? Or am I just making stuff up now?
