Pet store signage unleashed on Second Avenue

EVG reader Christina passes along photos of the new signage that has arrived at 31-33 Second Ave., aka The Luxe East, Ben Shaoul's new retail-residential complex here between East Second Street and East First Street...

As you can see the storefront will be an Unleashed (by Petco) outlet...

What is Unleashed?

As pet stores go, we’re anything but ordinary. Unleashed by Petco hit the pet scene in 2009, with our first store in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood. Our concept is simple – provide the same knowledge and know-how offered by Petco in a unique, smaller package.

Anyway, perhaps the storefront will help residents determine whether they are looking at the front or the back of the building.

BoweryBoogie first reported that a Petco-branded store was set for the retail space.

Previously on EV Grieve:
Ben Shaoul planning a 3-story addition at 31-33 Second Ave.

Bracing for 3 new floors at 31-33 Second Ave.

Checking in on the work in progress at 31-33 2nd Ave., where Ben Shaoul is adding 3 new floors

Ben Shaoul's bland new 2nd Avenue building is called The East Luxe

  1. A chain store masquerading as Mom & Pop. Ironic since chains stores make it nearly impossible for Mom & Pops to stay in business.

  2. Still looks like the back of the building still which means there will be lots of sniffing going on.

  3. Well, I don't know: the Unleashed in Tribeca doesn't pretend to be a mom-and-pop.

Really the only pet stores I go to are small local ones like Whiskers and Petopia—with only two branches each, they're hardly what you'd call chains.

At least it's not Petland, which sells live animals.

  4. Chinchillas! Excuse me sir, how many of these would I need to make a fur coat? ...June 25, 2015 at 1:56 PM

Scuba Diva, I'm pretty sure that Petco at Union Square north sells birds and fish and I know that the one at 193 West 237th St in the Bronx sells mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Or don't those count?

  5. I was referring to the Unleashed in Tribeca, although I get your point. I don't patronize any pet store that sells pets, especially since nowadays so many of them host adoption events.

  6. I don't have a pet (which is a lot like not having a kid), but I'll bet a lot of pet owners are happy now.

  7. Maybe a better name would have been "Petlandia". My dog is vegan and can see dead people that's why he barks all the time, so I let him because the dead love it.

  8. Hope I am wrong here, but reading between the lines it sounds like it's a Petco store but with higher prices, and a smaller selection. Let me guess, they have a concierge service or some such shit. Just let me buy my kibble and get out.

  9. I'm thinkin' Grieve (The Revelator) likes this name because it fondly reminds him of a safe word he once cherished.

  10. Unleashed.. I still think of that weird Jet Li movie:

    Unleashed (2005)
    R | 103 min | Action, Crime, Drama | 13 May 2005 (USA)

A man enslaved by the mob since childhood and raised into behaving like a human attack dog escapes his captors and attempts to start a new life.

  11. When in TriBeCa support Dudley's Paw at 327 Greenwich Street which is literally a Mom & Pop shop (minus the Pop, I think) owned and run by the same very nice lady since day one (1990 making it one of the rare non-restaurant/bar TriBeCa businesses around before 1992.)

  12. Terrible name (what a surprise)
Should have gone with "Growl, Bark, and Bite!"
