The Dry Dock Playground is closed for reconstruction
[Photo in Tompkins Square Park from Saturday]
With the basketball courts still under renovation at Tompkins Square Park, an EVG reader headed over to Dry Dock on East 10th Street and Avenue D to shoot some baskets... only to discover that the Dry Dock Playground is closed for reconstruction too (the pool is open though) ...
Signs point to a Spring 2016 completion date...
Construction apparently started in the spring. Per the NYC Parks site: "This project will reconstruct the play equipment, security lighting, and miscellaneous site work at Dry Dock Playground." The price tag is at nearly $1.5 million.
As for Tompkins, we haven't heard about a new completion date. But it does appear that workers are making progress.

Everything posted confirms....there is no east village.
ReplyDeleteThey couldn't have waited until September or October, when summer was over?
ReplyDeleteSomeone thought it was a good idea to close the court and playgrounds at the same time? What are the kids supposed to do this summer? Give them something to do other than get in trouble.
ReplyDeleteFFS. This is the SUMMER!! This is not the time to have a single playground closed.
ReplyDeleteMakes me wonder if this was done on purpose.
that rendering of the avenue D park loooks very nice... will be good to have all those nice jungle gyms and rubber equipment and fountains for the kids. will take some pressure off Tompkins.. of course the ETA is what is to be expected but hey... lookin good!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to figure out why a home oil delivery truck drove down onto the walkway underneath the w'burg bridge yesterday around 1 pm, I was sitting there looking at the shell remaining of the Domino Factory and wondering if I really was quitting my job and why within the 15 mins I was sitting there 2 cop vehicles and a parks car drove by on the walkway - and then a home oil delivery truck drives through the park and parks on the walkway. wtf? ISIL will have no problems devastating this city if this is NYPD's idea of security.
ReplyDeleteI live right across from the park in Riis houses and I actually think this is great. People are always concerned about the way the park looks currently, now work is being done and there are complaints. If you wait til the fall / winter the weather will delay construction which would push it to the summer anyway.
ReplyDeleteBesides there's courts and playgrounds at the east river park which is only 2 blocks away from dry dock. Why can't people walk an extra 2 blocks to get to a playground?
nygrump, did you call it into the cops? Even if they didn't ticket the driver, it would have made them aware that such things happen. Of course, it doesn't mean the oddness of the situation would penetrate their skulls enough to make them wonder if perhaps they should patrol the area with a more careful eye but it would be worth a shot.
