The article includes a few more details about Black Seed's soon-to-open First Avenue location ... including menu items other than bagels...
The third (and largest) branch of this growing concern has annexed the East Village’s historic De Robertis bakery, preserving that relic’s original penny-tile floor and tin ceiling while augmenting its own repertoire with more salads, more hot bagel sandwiches, and more pastries, from rugalach to rainbow cookies, in honor of its predecessor.
The magazine lists "September" as the opening date.
DeRobertis closed here on First Avenue between East 10th Street and East 11th Street last December after 110 years in business.
I am very concerned that, as another reader referred in an earlier post, Black Seed Bagels will cause a lot of smoke and odor with the operation of this new store, as they do on Elizabeth Street. Residents near the other location describe the bagel shop as a "fire breathing dragon". I can only hope they addressed this issue, knowing it is a potential problem in the other location. Can anyone address this? I live next door.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you have to worry about smoke. At the rate they're going with their remodeling project, which they say will stay true to the existing space, they'll never open. The new TSB will open before these guys.
ReplyDeleteAt least they have preserved the floor and ceiling. That is at least something. It sounds like it will be a hit.
ReplyDeleteFuck bagels. Right in the hole.
ReplyDeleteI'll believe the floor was preserved when I see it. All the construction photos show that they barely did anything to cover or protect it during the demolition work.
ReplyDeleteMore on their stated commitment to preservation (and their blown deadline to open this past spring): http://bit.ly/1JtMvfh
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anoonymous at 10:48. Bagels are horrible. Stay away from bread.
ReplyDeleteOnce in a blue moon I get a bagel from my favorite Deli. Ali on 7th and 1st Avenue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv6tuzHUuuk
ReplyDeleteAny word on whether or not they saved those beautiful tiled walls with the gold leaf mosaic bits? It would be criminal if not.
ReplyDelete@Gojira I peeked in this evening, the tile floors are all intact, as are the tiled wall fixtues and ceiling, they still have some work to do but it looks like the interior is mostly preserved. The bagel kettle is on the right side behind a counter near the front entrance, and you can see the old tiles are all still there--they didn't need to cover them up, after all these years they are amost indestructible.
