[Updated] Taking to the sidewalk for boiler help
Last Thursday, residents of an Icon Realty-owned building on East Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B arrived home to find a notice that the boiler was out.
Per the notice on the front door: "Please be advised there will be no hot water this evening. Our boiler company is working diligently to have the necessary repairs completed in the timeliest manner possible. We truly apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
Six days later, a resident says there is still no hot water... and no updates from management... which prompted someone to take to the sidewalk for help...
According to Con Edison, the piping that goes from the meter to the boiler recently failed an inspection … and needs to be replaced.

We're told that temporary water heaters arrived to the building this afternoon...

Apparently the plumber Icon hired smelled gas and called the fire department. Now the cooking gas is shut off for the building as well, according to a resident… the tenants are now receiving hot plates for cooking…

Of course there's not going to be any progress. This requires a permit, which requires a sacrifice to the DoB plumbing gods. Only when the gods are most benevolent will any progress be able to be made.
ReplyDeleteThat should only take, what, 2-3 months? I hope they file for a rent reduction.
ReplyDeleteNow your showers can be like your rent. Frozen. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the neighborhood updates? BBQ on second and 8th St is still CLOSED because of no gas. And that has been what two months now?
ReplyDeleteI live on 9th street and 2nd ave and our hot water was out for a week before it was finally fixed. Cold showers in the morning no matter how hot it is outside really sucks.
ReplyDeleteStage and B&H still closed - its a fucking war against us
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of taking their message to the streets or at least sidewalks. I can't image what a tourist or an NYU newbie must think.

ReplyDelete(9:55 sociopath comedy attempt ain't funny) — 5th Street Icon boiler complaint tenants, call 311, save the complaint numbers, then call Rosie Mendez's office and ask for Jasmine, and give that info to those nice folks while you're awaiting those services to which your payment of rent indeed entitles you —Icon isn't entitled to reduce folks' quality of life owing to whoopsiedaisy incompetence as a funny litttle modus operandum designed to cleanse profit-challemged buildings of those nasty old rent-stabilized tenants for optimum cash gain potential fulfilllment — enough's enough.
It is shameful that LES tenants should be subjected to such deprivation. Thank you EVGrieve for making this public. Those of us who do not live in the neighborhood are equally outraged by the slipshod (if not downright illegal ) behavior of this landlord, Icon Realty.
ReplyDeleteThey are becoming notorious for their despicable attitude toward their rent-stabilized tenants. Seems they are focused more on renting to students paying exorbitant rents (four in an apartment can manage it) than they are in keeping the building safe and livable for all.
I live next to an Icon-owned building and I wish to hell the City of New York would drag the entire company and its sleazy owners through the court system for all the crap they pull - and then they look the DOB inspectors in the eye and say "oh, we didn't know that wasn't allowed." Complete BS.
ReplyDeleteI've seen enough of Icon's "management" style - shoddy workmanship, illegal labor, and ongoing harassment of legitimate existing tenants - to feel that Icon should be banned from property ownership in NYC.
FYI: Councilwoman Mendez's office, and Jasmine in particular, was extremely helpful in helping me get much-needed repairs in my EV apartment, including restoring my hot water. And she was very nice, understanding and professional and she followed up!!!! I give them an A++++ and hope they can help. Hang in there, everyone dealing with Icon. Here's another tidbit about ICON: A friend lives in a recent purchase on Second Ave, currently being restored. They were due to get a new kitchen (until Icon realized that the leaseholder is disabled and his rent is fixed). Now Icon is no longer refurbishing their unit.
