Noted

By now, perhaps, you've seen the viral video of the rat dragging a slice of pizza down the stairs to the L train platform at First Avenue and East 14th Street last night.

If not, then you can watch the video and read an interview with the man who shot it at DNAinfo here. (Matt Little was returning to Bushwick after working at Upright Citizens Brigade on Avenue A.)

Meanwhile, The New Yorker has an essay from the pizza rat — Paul, who has lived in the East Village his whole life. (Four months.)

  1. That's not a rat, that's one of Ben Shaoul's new tenants bringing dinner home to his new underground affordable housing complex, aka The Sinkhole.

  2. Due to the rodent's lack of flip-flops and other approved bro accoutrements, we won't know for sure this rat's orientation until spectrum analysis of the video reveals whether the slice was "dollar" or "regular".

  3. I was part of a large crowd exiting the subway at that stop, and we were joined on the stairs up from the platform by a large rat loping along apparently without a care in the world. Rats in that station are special!

Rats own that station from about 3-7 am. I frequently pass through heading to TV studios in Brooklyn, and they are numerous and cannot be intimidated. Once saw a bro passed out with an open bag of chips resting on his chest (beer still firmly in hand). I watched a rat make several trips up his leg to grab a chip, return to the floor to leisurely dine, before returning for more. I thought briefly of trying to wake the gent, but figured you deserve what you get when you put yourself in that position.

  6. I sincerely hope Ratty was able to drag that slice down the rest of the stairs and into his home to enjoy in peace. Had I been there when this happened, I would have made sure to pick it up and place it on the floor near the stairs where it would have been out of the way so he could go back and get it.

  7. ALWAYS CARRY A LASER POINTER, folks.

Rats aren't predators like cats, and it's hard to get them to run around in circles but, unlike people, they do see the attraction of the little red dot, and it's fun to play with them while you're waiting for a train.

    Pizza is obviously better, thouigh.

  8. When the FUCK are we gonna have a proper sci-fi film about giant mutant rats marauding through the subways and streets of NYC?

Who would you cast in it? The human protagonist should have a humorous vibe to him but not so much he's completely comedic.

  9. This must be a millennial rat.....gets the job half done, then goes scurrying home to mom and dad.

  10. This isn't typical of New York and our rats. Most of them have delivery rather than take-out.

  11. This city is full to overflowing with feral animals covering it with a layer of feces, rats are only the most obvious part of the problem of pigeons and squirrels and cats and humans...
