Planet Fitness muscling in on Essex Crossing

Gyms are always a popular topic around here (for instance), so...

Planet Fitness has signed a deal to open a 22,000-square-foot complex on the second floor at 145 Clinton St., on Essex Crossing site 5, according to The Lo-Down.

And via Crain's:

"Planet Fitness [offers] a $10 monthly membership fee that makes it accessible to everyone, which was very important to us." said S. Andrew Katz, a principal at the Prusik Group, which is a minority partner in the $1 billion-plus development and oversees the leasing of retail space. "There are gyms that charge $250 a month for membership, but those don't fit the community's needs.”

The 145 Clinton St. building is expected to be completed in 2017.

  1. Planet Fitness: You get what you pay for.

The "gym" which offers free pizza and bagels - way to encourage healthy eating "PF".

The gym which also throws out people for reasons which have nothing to do with being disruptive.

Fuck that ex-con's $250 a month gym AND Planet Fitness.

  2. Maybe if it's customers ate less bacon in cow hoof they could exercise less and save money on food and gym memberships. New York is turning into L.A., everyone worried about being thin or bulked up (if you're a bro). The tattoo thing is another gift from L.A. (and Miami where it's too hot to wear attractive clothing apparently). Ick

  3. Planet Fitness is awesome. I pay $100 a year at the Bushwick location. I guess it's gone up a bit now but it is still cheap as hell. They've forced Crunch to lower their insane membership fees. Never seen anyone thrown out, but if they occasionally do the person probably deserves it. Everyone knows macho self-involved inconsiderate douchebaggery at gyms can get out of hand sometimes.

The pizza and bagel thing is admittedly a bit weird but you know what? You don't have to take part. And I really hate the purple everywhere but did I mention I pay $8.50 A MONTH? I can deal. It's cheap enough that you see all kinds of people there -- longtime locals, men, women, in their 50s, 60s, 70s… it's a beautiful thing!

Hate all you want. It's a great thing that they'll be at Essex Crossing.
