And the revamped 1st Avenue Dunkin' Donuts is back open; now with new banner
Less than two weeks after closing for renovations, the Dunkin' Donuts on the corner of First Avenue and East Sixth Street is back open with a fresh-new DD look...
However, the giant DD cup never returned...

...and they apparently never found an advertiser for their Complimentary Hand Sanitizer, which workers have discarded...

ReplyDeleteOk, I officially accept grouch status because I hate Dunkin Donuts. I believe they have more outlets than even Starbucks. They don't serve anything of nutritional value. They displace other small businesses and mom&pops. Their coffee tastes funny and costs just as much as Starbucks. Their appearance is kind of bland and sterile, including this 6th St/1st Ave location. Tbey don't usually have bathrooms lime Syarbucks. And the big DD Cup looked cheap, like a piece of saggy garbage.

ReplyDeleteBeing from New England originally I grew up with a fabulous D&D in my home town. Nobody should expect nutrition from a donut but the same could be said for a plain bagel which is just processed white flour but are trending with the 20 somethings.
ReplyDeleteI drink my own coffee and when out a $1 cup from my bodega does the trick. I am old enough to remember what great signs were about until corporation and some city's zoning laws prohibited them for cluttering up the visual landscape. This large cup was a bit of our American consumer culture and I am sad to see it go.

ReplyDelete@Donnie: Sorry to disagree, but I LIKE DD's coffee. Only coffee that doesn't give me heartburn, and priced better than Starbucks by far. If that makes me low-class, so be it - or as my friend says "I enjoy the pleasures of an uneducated palate"!
ReplyDeleteI also like ordering at DD b/c its in normal language (like: "medium iced caramel latte), as opposed to a "half caff latte venti blah-blah specialito" or whatever the weird terminology at Starbucks is! (I try never to go into a Starbucks.)

I haven't had DD's coffee in literally years; when I was on FB, there was a campaign to get DD to start carrying soymilk for their coffee, and despite pressure from many, many people, they [DD corporate] flatly refused. Then I was kicked off FB and was unaware that some time later, DD began offering soy for its coffee.
Since that's apparently old news, I'll go in and try the coffee; I probably won't be a regular, because even though I always carry my own (16 ounce) cup, many places insist on charging me 2 or 3 dollars for a refill. Porto Rico, with two locations nearby and one over on Bleecker near 6th avenue, will give me a refill for 75¢. Guess where I usually choose to get coffee. (And I unfortunately suffer from a nagging, overeducated palate.)
To add to the other complaints, they misspelled "LATTE" and "LATE" on their banner.
ReplyDeleteThey get props for truth in advertising. None of the BEST COFFEE ON THE PLANET stuff, or even GOOD FOOD. Just a simple OPEN LATE.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, one of the downtown McDonalds tried a similar tack - rather than falsely advertise GOOD FOOD, they had a big sign that said CLEAN RESTROOMS. I am informed that that was only slightly exaggerated.
I've been into a Starbucks twice in my life, once to use the bathroom and the second time to use electricity to charge my phone during Super Storm Sandy. I don't buy into the whole coffee culture and see Starbucks the same as every other corporate fast food restaurant. Most of what they serve is probably jammed pack with sugar and I'm not talking about their baked goods.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's some sort of status symbol to walk around with one of these cups in your hand like that is suppose to impress someone. This generation as taken 2 things previously done as relaxation (having a cup of coffee and a chat on the phone) into activities to be done on the go.
I'm not a fan of unnecessarily bright lights in this neighborhood. All shops ramping it up to compete with the other shops doing it = a more aggressive level of advertising in my face which I don't appreciate. Tone it down, not up - we SEE you.
