The Barrel has closed on Stuyvesant Street

The Barrel, the tapas bar at 10 Stuyvesant Street adjacent to East Ninth Street, has closed.

EVG reader Christopher Pelham passes along this photo from last night… The sign on the door says, "We have loved getting to know you and serving you these past years! … We will miss all of you."

We didn't hear any reason for this closing. The Barrel stopped its weekday lunch service back in September. There isn't any mention of the closure on The Barrel's social media properties.

As we recall, the owners of Panya next door opened The Barrel five-plus years ago, taking over part of the former Around the Clock space. That 20-year-old diner closed in January 2009.

  1. Hey, I was in this restaurant just last night. After buying 2 copies of St. Marks is Dead, my friend and I took one copy over to Tony, who was there, working hard as usual. He owns this place and used to own Around the Clock and before that Dojos on St. Marks. He's mentioned in the book, so we thought he might like a copy - the first one signed by the author at Cooper Union! This spot is just having some renovations done, and Tony says it will have a kick-off reopening in a couple of weeks. So, no need to worry. It's looking very nice inside so far.

  2. I liked this place and have been sorry to see it so often closed, of late. And now for good. There aren't actually many sit-down, civilized places for "American" food around, especially at reasonable prices. (I.e. not The Smith -- which is loud anyway.) This was one.

  3. There are more and more tapas and small dish places in the EV, some of them outstanding like Izakaya on E 6th and the Korean place on 1st Ave near 6th. Barrel's food was fairly good but didn't stand out IMO for the prices they were charging, and precisely for the reason that it was more "civilized" it probably didn't attract the student crowd. I'm hoping Mr. Yoshida retools it with a better chef or a cheaper menu and re-opens soon. I know he put a lot of love into the interior design. I heard he imported the wood....
