Avenue A Wine & Liquor will remain a liquor store



Avenue A Wine & Liquor at 196 Avenue A between East 12th Street and East 13th Street closed back in August.

The 900-square foot space had been on the market for $10,500 a month.

Looks like there's a taker for the space... the State Liquor Authority (SLA) notice in the front window notes that another on-premises liquor store is on the way in...



The application is pending with the SLA.

    Can't believe I'm saying this but this is only kind of business with a liquor license which I would be happy to have on the block. Hurray it won't be yet another sports bar, loud restaurant with all you can drink (drunks) brunch, etc...

    I agree with the previous poster. I would rather a liquor store than another bar with screaming patrons.

    This is retail. We don't have one on this part of Avenue A. Great. I wish we could get rid of some of the bars and have more daytime retail. Not Cafe Bene mind you.

    This is great! I loved that wine store and its really close by. Hope the new owners are good neighbors and people!

    Hopefully their prices will be cheaper than the prior store. I always go to Bee Liquors on B between 13th & 14th. The prices are reasonable, they are friendly and they tend to get neighborhood folks as customers.

    I love Cafe Bene. The snacks and drinks are good, and people who work there are so nice. I applaud the owner for hiring kids to work there who would never get hired at the cafes around here.

    I second 12:02. I went to the 13th and A Caffe Bene during Santacon, and the young people who work there could not have been nicer. I'm cranky about errrything that happens on upper Avenue A, but Caffe Bene, I'm cool with. If anyone is worried it's a bar (because they sell beers), I encourage you to just take a walk into the space, I think you will find it is not at all a bar atmosphere.

    How can you make money selling wine and liquor with a $10k rent, plus labor, and buying inventory?

    The closing of Avenue A Wines has led me to the Wine Shop on 9th Street between A and 1st, closer to A. It has been fantastic so far and I am really happy with my new wine shop and will continue to shop there even when this new one comes in.

    12:02/12:53, it's a big chain with no ties to the neighborhood which has been opening locations left and right in NYC.
    That spells bad news in many ways and is something that shouldn't really be supported when there are numerous neighborhood coffee shops. I'm not saying never go in there, but think about that, that's the reason people aren't psyched on it. I don't think people think of it as a bar because it's nothing like that.
