[EVG photo from August]
The shop at 196 Avenue A between East 12th Street and East 13th Street closed back in August. (We never did hear a reason for the closure.)
And now the space is for rent. Here's the listing via LoopNet:
A Great retail space located in the heart of the East Village just off the corner of 12th Street. The space offers fantastic frontage of about18' with two display windows, 10' ceilings and nice open space. There is about 400 sf of space in the basement. Space can be vented for food use through the rear. All uses are considered.
This is a very hot area of the East Village with great restaurants, nightlife, retail and residential at the intersection.
The monthly asking rent for the 900-square foot space is $10,500.

My biggest nightmare is if this place turns into a sports bar, oh hell any kind of a bar. Tomorrow's alcoholics are starting today.
I hope this doesn't turn into another bar. This corner is already party central on weekend nights. In my dreams, it would become a laundromat, but the rent is probably too steep...
$10,000 a month is crazy for retail. That price is quite indicative the "space can be vented for food use" meaning restaurant and leave it to the new business owners to get their wine/beer license.
Sickening. This location could still be great as a wine/liquor shop as the one on First Avenue and 14th price gorges and others aren't too close. 9th Street near A has a nice shop now but is pretty small and I still think this location is a great gateway to the neighborhood with foot traffic. Anyway, this price is devastating.
