Nic Ratner and Robert Morgan, owners of three establishments on Second Avenue — Shoolbred's, Ninth Ward and Kingston Hall — look to be expanding their reach to Avenue A.
According to public documents (PDF!) on file at the CB3 website, Ratner and Morgan are applying for a new liquor license for the former 10 Degrees Bistro and Flea Market Cafe space at 131 Avenue A.
There aren't many details, such as a proposed name and menu served, on the questionnaire filed ahead of Monday night's CB3 SLA committee meeting. The paperwork shows 8 tables good for 31 seats as well as an L-shaped, 15-foot bar. The proposed hours are Sunday-Thursday 1 p.m. to 2 a.m.; until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
As we first reported on Aug. 18, the landlord took legal possession of the restaurant between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street. A sign arrived the next day noting that 10 Degrees was closed for maintenance. They never reopened.
The proprietors of Ten Degrees Bar, which remains open around the corner on St. Mark's Place, took over operations of the Flea Market Cafe in March 2013 ... changing the name to 10 Degrees Bistro in December 2013.
The December CB3-SLA committee meeting is Monday night at 6:30 in the CB3 office, 59 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery.

Shoolbred's, Ninth Ward, and Kingston Hall are some of my favorite bars in the city. The comforting fireplaces, the top notch food and drinks, and the complete lack of TVs and the sports-douchebags that TVs bring in; these places are heavenly. I can't wait for this new place to open.
ReplyDeleteIf you all love there other places so much go to the ones they have on second avenue, they have 3. That isn't too far too walk. In terms of the hood needing another bar that isn't a dive bar, are you for real? There aren't many dive bars left, most of them have been converted into more upscale places. Flea Market was a restaurant, not a bar, so if these guys want to open a decent restaurant with a decent price point so be it, but a bar that will inevitably have boozy brunch, I don't think so. C'mon do we really need another bar, I can't imagine anyone who intends to live here and not just drink away a few years here, thinks we need another bar.

ReplyDeleteActually, the owners live in the same neighborhood that their establishments are in. One lives around the corner from Ninth Ward and has been there since the 80s. The other lives above one of the places they own. So, according to you then, they actually shit where they eat. And my guess is those buildings aren't the Jersey McMansions you should probably be living in if you can't stand "the city that never sleeps" anymore.
