Team behind Shoolbred's and Ninth Ward vying for 10 Degrees Bistro space on Avenue A

[EVG photo from September]

Nic Ratner and Robert Morgan, owners of three establishments on Second Avenue — Shoolbred's, Ninth Ward and Kingston Hall — look to be expanding their reach to Avenue A.

According to public documents (PDF!) on file at the CB3 website, Ratner and Morgan are applying for a new liquor license for the former 10 Degrees Bistro and Flea Market Cafe space at 131 Avenue A.

There aren't many details, such as a proposed name and menu served, on the questionnaire filed ahead of Monday night's CB3 SLA committee meeting. The paperwork shows 8 tables good for 31 seats as well as an L-shaped, 15-foot bar. The proposed hours are Sunday-Thursday 1 p.m. to 2 a.m.; until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

As we first reported on Aug. 18, the landlord took legal possession of the restaurant between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street. A sign arrived the next day noting that 10 Degrees was closed for maintenance. They never reopened.

The proprietors of Ten Degrees Bar, which remains open around the corner on St. Mark's Place, took over operations of the Flea Market Cafe in March 2013 ... changing the name to 10 Degrees Bistro in December 2013.

The December CB3-SLA committee meeting is Monday night at 6:30 in the CB3 office, 59 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery.

  1. Their bars are nice, but it's annoying that you're not allowed to bring your kids in during the day.

  3. I like both of those bars. Service and food are good and they're not bro heavy.

  4. Sorry they get packed with a real douchey crowd. Not sports just other douchebags. We don't need another bar here. Empellon is a real nightmare.

  5. Awful bars bringing net-negative community impact. Another big step towards converting Avenue A into 3rd avenue.

  6. Did anyone expect something other than a bar here in the Alcohol District?

  7. Well look at who their lawyer is-end of story.

  8. LOL - oh the hilarity.

The application has the checkbox next to "Background (quiet)" music vs "Entertainment level" yet they list the following gear:

"Mackie 1660 watts amplifier with 4 EV speakers."

    That's 400 watts per speaker!

This is going to be a VERY LOUD bar, opening NEXT TO ANOTHER bar.

    No, no, no, no.

  9. Yes, can't wait. Love their places. This neighborhood needs someplace that isn't a dive. Their food is pretty fantastic as well. More Lamb Sliders please.

  10. Gumbo at Ninth Ward is delicious!

  11. Well, I'm glad it's them opening a new bar. It's guaranteed to be tasteful, have good food and most importantly great music!
Needless to say, I'm a fan of their other bars.

  12. Shoolbred's, Ninth Ward, and Kingston Hall are some of my favorite bars in the city. The comforting fireplaces, the top notch food and drinks, and the complete lack of TVs and the sports-douchebags that TVs bring in; these places are heavenly. I can't wait for this new place to open.

  13. If you all love there other places so much go to the ones they have on second avenue, they have 3. That isn't too far too walk. In terms of the hood needing another bar that isn't a dive bar, are you for real? There aren't many dive bars left, most of them have been converted into more upscale places. Flea Market was a restaurant, not a bar, so if these guys want to open a decent restaurant with a decent price point so be it, but a bar that will inevitably have boozy brunch, I don't think so. C'mon do we really need another bar, I can't imagine anyone who intends to live here and not just drink away a few years here, thinks we need another bar.

  14. Those guys killed it with Shoolbed's and 9th Ward. Can't wait for this place to open. Avenue A could use a cosy fireplace!

  15. Lotta trolls on here today. I am SURE just everyone loves, loves, loves those bars .. NOT.

"comforting fireplaces" yeah, right. How about adding in some beds too, so the drunks can sleep it off in place, instead of them screaming down our streets at 3am?

  16. Hey shills - you're all kinda easy to pick out what with your Google+ status and all... How long y'all been workin' in PR?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh stop it. I Love their bars! Moreover the food at these places is incredible. The burger at Shoolbred's is the thing dreams are made of.

    ReplyDelete
  18. So if someone doesn't share your opinion, that makes them a shill? Got it... you're absurd. Clearly people like these places or they wouldn't be thriving and opening a new joint.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @9:20pm: "People like these places." Um, bars will always open b/c lots of people think getting drunk is the best kind of fun their small brains can imagine.

And bars "thrive" b/c they are a very easy way to make $$$$$ - the markup is incredible. You'll notice none of the owners of these bars live anywhere near their bars! They don't want to deal with the shit their businesses help create; they want to live in a "nice" neighborhood. They have no problem shitting on THIS neighborhood to afford their McMansions elsewhere.

  20. @10:09 You think that boring suburbia is a "nice" neighborhood? I'll take the EV any day!

  21. Anon 9:20: Obvious shills are obvious. Only a shill would use Google+, because, y'know, gotta be promotin' yourself all the time - never let an opportunity to mention one of your brands go by...

    ReplyDelete
  22. You'll notice there's no posting from anyone on Google+ in the post about The Cock. No brand there. No one's gettin' paid to post.

  23. Actually, the owners live in the same neighborhood that their establishments are in. One lives around the corner from Ninth Ward and has been there since the 80s. The other lives above one of the places they own. So, according to you then, they actually shit where they eat. And my guess is those buildings aren't the Jersey McMansions you should probably be living in if you can't stand "the city that never sleeps" anymore.
Oh, and how do I know this? Because I've slept with both of them...because I still have sex.

  24. Great. Another place for assholes and bros.

  25. I just ... like the last time we talked about Kingston Hall, no one seemed concerned that the theme for the bar is white colonialism. Like, white ownership of slaves, people. Does no one really care?

  26. Comments section reached a new all time low. Nice job 5:53.

  27. If Bob will be bartending all will be great!

  28. Gotta love the bros. We rule this neighborhood with an iron fist. Watch out for Santa con. It's going to be insane yo.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @5:53am: Ha, as if! Nice try, ho ho ho!

    ReplyDelete
  30. @4:47pm: Gotta hate the bros! Hey, bring it on - maybe the police will show up and take "appropriate" action.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @4:47pm: Bad typos; you wrote "we rule this neighborhood with an iron fist" (which is so stupid it's really funny; you drunkards are seriously brain damaged from all that alcohol).

You MEANT to write "we are so weak we can't live without a drink, and after that we got nothin' - just piss".

  32. My hat is off to Anonymous 5:53 -- I wish I still had sex.

Be that as it may, I am not one of the prudes that dominate the comments section. I still think restaurants and bars are good things, even if I never go out any more.
