Poppy's Gourmet Corner closes for good after tomorrow

Poppy's Gourmet Corner on Avenue A at East 12th Street will be closing up after the business day tomorrow, EVG reader Shawn Chittle reports...Owner Mike Attal told Shawn that the rent is too high now...

Jared Kushner's Westminster Management is the landlord. This has become an increasingly valuable chunk of retail with Douglas Steiner's mixed-use building with ground-floor retail and 82 market-rate condos going up on the surrounding property.

  1. Thanks for nothing Mr. Ivanka Trump, we can't wait to see your father-in-law get his butt whooped in the general election by Bernie Sanders.

  3. One more gone. Hope everyone enjoys standing in long lines at CVS, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, supermarkets, etc when they just need to pick up *one* thing...

  5. Devastating, Michael and his staff have been nothing but the best. They made probably 50+ student breakfasts for the east side community school kids daily. Chatting soccer and real madrid with michael and sal in the morning was my therapy. Heard this earlier too. $6k+ increase per month. Kushner @$&%ery.

  6. That's sad news. Was a go to place for this and that. Meh.

  7. This was my daily bodega and weekend routine for the past 7 years. I will miss Mike, Sam, Salvador, German, and all the gang. They were super nice, gave me credit when I didn't have money on me, and always gave me discounts. I can't remember the last time I ever had to say what I wanted, they just knew based on the time of day and prepared my breakfast or lunch for me.

You can catch Salvador at the bodega on 12th and 1st. He's taking a week off then starting there.

I'd like to add that the 7-Eleven was not the reason they closed; the rent increase would have pushed him out anyway, and if anything its the condo going in next door.

  9. Okay, that well and truly sucks. Another loss - I wonder how many more the neighborhood can sustain, and when the tipping point will finally be reached. Because it does not seem anyone in a position of power can or even wants to do anything to stop it.

  10. The school closing too, added.

    Hey Gojira

People in power will stop it when enough small businesses and their voting customers make it too difficult to not stop it. Ed Dunne has the right idea. SBJSA NOW. Tell that to Dan Garodnick, de Blasio, and Mark-Viverito.

  12. That's sad, I like Poppy's. I'll be looking for Salvador up on 12th and 1st tough, at least there's that. Thanks for the tip Shawn.

  13. Jared Kushner doesn't have enough money already. He needs more so his bombastic father in law can say what a great guy he is. Consider the source.

  14. Just an FYI: I have called Councilman Dan Garodnick's office on multiple occasions to discuss the need for SBJSA...the woman taking the calls just makes claims about all the good he does and TALKS RIGHT OVER YOU whenever you bring up the SBJSA. He and his office represent real estate interests and DO NOT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. Calling and writing is not going to change anything. Sorry, too, to see this place go: They were always pleasant and ran a tight ship.

  15. #SBJSA #TAKEBACKNYC Vote these current politicians out! They are in the pockets of the Oligarchs. Stop them from bowling over the entire city. Wake up people.

  16. Ken, I second Anon. 9:58. I have made calls, sent emails, signed petitions, but it does not matter. All of the people you name, and many more, are slurping at the same trough - they're in the pocket of the all-powerful real estate interests in the city and have no intention of slowing down the juggernaut, which in turn would derail their highly lucrative gravy train. Several times, when Bloomblasio has been on WNYC taking questions, I've called wanting to ask why he doesn't force Mark-Viverito to bring SBJSA to a vote; funnily enough, my call is never picked up by the show host, so I'm still waiting to ask him.

  17. They were my last landlords in the East Village too. Scum in nice loafers.

  18. Gojira, WNYC and the NYT for that matter are absolutely worthless. They will never call out an elected. You have the right idea tho, why won't Speaker MMV call a hearing on a bill she sponsorored not once, but TWICE as a Council Member? A bill that would stop the closings and save much needed jobs in our communities. If you or anyone else is motivated, pls call or email her and ask her why as a "progressive" leader she is blocking democracy and not allowing the SBJSA get a hearing or vote. Is she going to block a vote on the SBJSA just like Quinn did in'09? Mviverito@council.NYC.gov 347.297.4922

  19. Not all bodegas are the same. I went in here a few times and it was way more expensive that the other bodegas in the area.

Good for you! Garodnick, Mark-Viverito and de Blasio are still ignoring us because not enough of us, small biz owners especially, are raising a stink. When enough do it will be that much more difficult for Garodnick, Mark-Viverito and de Blasio to ignore us. Become an activist. Join TakeBackNYC. #SBJSA #TAKEBACKNYC

  23. Hi everyone. Does anyone know what happened to the little calico cat the gang recently had in the bodega? If they needed a home for her I'd happily take her but wasn't sure how to get in touch with any of them. I'll be sure to find Salvador next week at the other bodega if I can't find out sooner!

  24. Sydney I have no info for you, but bless you for being so thoughtful and I hope that little cat finds a home with you soon. :)
