Report: Police shoot man with knife in Jacob Riis housing complex on East 6th Street

The NYPD reportedly shot a knife-wielding man on the seventh floor of the Jacob Riis II housing complex on East Sixth Street and the FDR late last night.

The Daily News reports:

An NYPD sergeant and officer, both assigned to Police Service Area 4, found a 25-year-old man brandishing a knife, cops said. The man ignored the officers’ repeated commands to drop the knife.

“He kept advancing on them in a threatening manner,” an NYPD spokesman said.

The man, who was shot once in the chest, was taken to Bellevue where his injuries didn't appear to be life threatening, per the Daily News. The paper also described the man as "emotionally disturbed."

WPIX reports that the man, whose grandmother lives in the building, has more than 12 prior arrests.

  1. Why was the jerk not given a life sentence for all these crimes?

  2. We don't seem to be very good at dealing with mentally ill people.

Maybe they can get him help before he hurts himself or someone else. Probably not.

  4. I don't know whether this man was mentally ill, but if he was, it is incredibly difficult to keep someone in a hospital against their will, so you can't simply blame the system. There are doctors who want patients to remain hospitalized but can't force them to stay in most cases.

Complicating out-patient treatment is that mental illnesses can only be kept under control if a patient is willing to take their meds and seek regular treatment, and these patients are not always willing or even able to do this. Part of their illness is being out of control and in denial, so you can hardly expect them to stick with a treatment plan out on their own.

I don't know what the solution is, but this is one complicated problem.

  5. Refreshing that the cops on scene shot once, when they had to, and only once.

  6. Mental illness isn't an excuse to be a criminal. The majority of mentally ill people have never robbed anybody.

  7. I assert anyone living in this "civilization" who is not emotionally disturbed is mentally ill. We can be proud of the methane volcano erupting north of Los ANgeles and the chemical dam bursts and overarching all of it is Fukushima, which continues to pump out radiation into the environment without restraint. Your children are all going to have horrible cancers and immune problems and die in unimaginable pain. Don't be mad at me, I'm didn't cause the pollution. I wonder how much this has to do with all the foreign workers CON ED has brought into the USA to replace US workers, like Disney.

  9. Anonymous at 11:57 AM hit the nail on the head. To all the pseudo doctors above who have labeled him mentally ill: how do you know this? Did you examine the criminal?
Oh, excuse me fellow libertarians for a momentary sell out: I have read my Dr. Ssasz and I know full well that "mental illness" is hokum.
