The morning after the day of the blizzard

[2nd Avenue at East 10th]

Just a few early morning photos... as people and machines continue to dig out from yesterday's snow "event." According to The New York Times, Central Park counted 26.8 inches of snow, the second-highest total ever recorded.

I do not know how much snow fell in Tompkins Square Park. What I was going to use as a gauge has been destroyed or stolen. Anyway. Enjoy the day. And it's really slippery out. As you might expect.

  1. Mick seems to be thinking something along the lines of "Crikey, look at all that blow."

  3. A lot of happy doggies out there in the snow glare!

I expressed some NY values today and stopped to help a very freaked out guy from NJ whose SUV got stuck blocking 6th St when he got stuck trying to park on a snowbank, he had no conception of rocking the car off the wedge of snow on which the SUV was balanced and he was not dressed for the day after the biggest blizzard in NYC - he got progressively more freaked out as people came over to help or offer advice (and the cars backed up 6th St beeped) - apparently after a big storm there are folks just walking around with shovels (and beer) who help dig out the Stuck for tips - the driver of the SUV was getting very frustrated obviously with SUV as he floored the gas to a painful engine noise and didn't seem to want to listen to anything anyone was telling him - the guy with the shovel said to him through the windshield 'hey we can just move on, we don't have to help you' - and he seemed to listen a little better but didn't seem to like it when the driver of the snowplow waiting behind the stuck SUV got out to give him some very smart instruction - the shovel guy scraped out the snow underneath and the driver seemed to finally figure out rocking the car and then pulled out with us pushing - he threw $20 at the guy with the shovel and blasted out of there without even a wave of thanks - the guy who got the $20 asked me if I wanted $5 and I waved him off, he was pleased because he said he had to pay $10 to another guy who had actually just shown up, which wasn't my problem, but seemed odd...
