Since the new storefront was unveiled at 114 Third Ave. near East 14th Street ... the Bagel Belly coming soon signage has arrived...
As you can see, the bagels here will be "hand rolled & kettle boiled" ...
No mention of toasted.
The proprietors here also own Namu Deli & Grocery at 252 Third Ave. between 20th Street and 21st Street.
And these two questions came up the last time we mentioned Bagel Belly.
1) Is Tompkins Square Bagels still opening an outpost on Second Avenue?
Yes. Renovations were slowed down by some DOB-mandated modifications. Read more here.
2) Is Black Seed Bagels still open on First Avenue?
Yes. They are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
This will make 4 bagel places within a 5 block area!! A bonanza of bageleries....

ReplyDeleteTypical food trend, the old bagel get's (discovered) by the foodies and as with fro-yo, nouvelle tacos, etc... there is an explosion of one food product focused businesses everywhere.

ReplyDeleteI've been there a few times, but always for take-out bagels, because the place gets crowded and the music is too LOUD.
The bagels, however, are excellent. And so is the tofu vegan cream cheese spread, believe it or not. Staff were friendly too. So I will support Black Seed.
Not sure I will support Bagel Belly, though, because I would rather not develop a...bagel belly.

I feel like there is a glut of bagels all of a sudden. Coincidentally it's getting harder to find a regular old bacon egg and cheese type sandwich.
ReplyDeleteRobin Raj used to sell us a sausage, egg and cheese bagel for $3.50-4, depending on the day. I'm sure Bagel Belly will ask for twice that.

Maybe the opening will coincide when Belly stops in NYC on August 11 at Bowery Ballroom for their reunion tour. So take your hat off boy

Bagels are the new bongs!
ReplyDeleteI agree the music at Black Seed is sooo loud. I think it must be one of these marketing things because lot a places do that. Loud pop music is hip just like the bagels. They do it with the open facades too, like at Tompkins Square Bagels where millenials spill out on the sidewalk. Yay hooray-bunch of idiots.

Guessing the BB owners have no idea what they're doing. Their deli is no great shakes and bagels are an entirely different ball game. BB owner spotted past two weeks sitting in BS and TSB with a notebook. Korean dude. Just sits and watches. Sometimes comes with his chef. I know this because I saw owner of one of said shops bitching to his manager about it while I ate lunch. Guy was not happy. Then saw same guys again in the other shop. Anyway , if that's the extent of BB s bagel knowledge , I'd imagine they will be ill-prepared. Let the bagel wars begin.

ReplyDeleteIf it's going to be like any of the ones on First Ave. I will probably like it. My favorite is Davids. Any one of those is good and comfortable to sit. I don't like to sit or stand with the crowd at Tompkins Square bagels.

The more bagel shops the better just as long as they are a real bagel shop. I'm for classic bagel and pizza shops.
