ReplyDeleteAlthough pulling a 12 ouncer out is no longer allowed, I am sure they will still have a few options of tall boys, which are single, just a few more ounces, which isn't terrible either.

ReplyDeleteNow you won't have the Bridge and Tunnel, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Mid-town Tourists, getting drunk without going into a drinking establishment, unless of course they buy 6 paks. Single sales are for those who drink in the street and in the parks, which is illegal of course.
One less place for these drunks, foolish kids and other jerks to buy their beer.

ReplyDeleteGood.. I'm tired of getting home with a 6-pack from there and realizing that one or more of them are some other random type of beer that was added to the case.

ReplyDeleteIf you want to be an angry person, so be it. But, can you try to be angry and factual?
Examples of when a single beer purchase might be made that is not for consumption in a park (all of which are personal examples):
1. For when a recipe calls for beer (stew for example) and you don't want to buy a bunch of stout that you won't drink.
2. For when you have a sh8tty day at work and you're not a wine drinker (which is acceptable to have a glass of at the end of a day, so why not a glass of beer?), so you just want a beer and relax.
3. For when you want to mix and match and create your own six-pack of a few different beers to bring to a friend's place (hello beerstore!).
I love Key Food - it's cheap, local, and if I don't want to, I don't have to talk to anyone. I can mumble my way through my grocery list and check myself out and i'm on my way. Also, I don't mind that they are getting rid of single-beers...that's up to them.
Chill, everyone. Chill.
The real fight here is for the longevity of bodegas in the neighborhood. The selection around Key Foods is pretty piss-poor.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget there also used to be a large bodega/grocery store-lite a couple of blocks down on A between 6th & 7th but was torn down to put up a new building. That bodega won't be going back in, although apparently yet another gym will be...

Bodegas, what bodegas? Most have been replaced by a CVS, Duane Reade,... or a gourmet convenience store.
ReplyDeleteKey Food might as well since they don't sell 40's, or Olde English or Colt 45. Plus they don't give you a brown bag when you purchase one.
But I have embraced change and progressed and only get my beer at a Michelin starred-restaurant, or a gastropub whose celebrity chef is fastidious enough to have a craft and artisan beer paired with his/her latest oeuvre.
There's a bodega at 3rd st and ave A.

"No, alcohol is prohibited in all parks."
All bodegas are not created equal, and many that remain in the area around Key Foods are straight up crap. It doesn't take a detective to realize that a number of them are open only as fronts for other businesses. We need another market / larger bodega that's similar to Key Food. And Union Market with their insane prices ain't it.
ReplyDeleteThey made the change to the loose beer policy a few months ago. The beer selection changed about two weeks ago. The variety of craft beers more than doubled and the prices actually went down.

Besides, I'm surrounded by pharmacies and Trader Joe's and Whole Foods where I get to wait on line with the beautiful people while getting a loose I to the the A. You'll never catch NYC's ambassador in a bodega; she can't even pronounce the word or know what its unless reading from a cue card..

ReplyDeleteExcept during Santacon and unless you're a white privileged and/or hipster having a rosé during an outdoor film showing, like the ones in Bryant Park or at TSP, or at Rockaway Beach, then the NYC Parks Enforcement Patrol would just turn a blind eye and let you be while harassing a non white privileged and/or hipster at same film showing or beach having a Fanta orange and the NYC PEP and NYPD accuse you of it being a nutcracker.

And since tickets for open containers are to increase revenue, anyone looking middle class and up is SOL if they try to drink outside. Or have you missed the last ten years of NYPD enforcement?
They "search every single bags", but as I had said they turn a blind eye if one is white privileged esp. a beautiful white privileged, they let them go with their wine in the wine carrier or totes .
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a good source of revenue and they get them mostly from the non-white not beautiful not privileged. Because they are more likely will not have a lawyer to represent them or not show up for summon hearings due to work or family obligations thus they're the ones ending-up paying the fines. Where have I been the last ten years? Kept being harassed by the NYPD and the New York PEP for trying to enjoy a public gathering. Where has the NYPD enforcement been the last ten years during Santacon? It's good to be shielded by one's privilegeness, eh?
