Verizon Wireless closes for good on 2nd Avenue



The Verizon Wireless on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place has closed up shop, EVG correspondent Steven notes.

The storefront looks to be in the process of being cleaned out...



This Verizon outlet opened in September 2013, taking over the space from Cohen's Optical. This building seems to have a tough time holding on to retail tenants, such as DF Mavens and 7-Eleven. However, the owner of 99 Favor Taste is bringing Korean-style barbecue and Chinese hot pot to two of the empty storefronts on the St. Mark's side.

As for the Verizon, the space once housed in part the St Mark's Cinema... as seen here in "Moscow on the Hudson" with Robin Williams from 1984...



The cinema closed in 1985.

    I liked the guy who ran this store. He was always very helpful and tried to be a good neighbor. A lot of entitled youngsters would treat him like crap and he'd still give great customer service.

    A few months ago he said he would have to move. I guess it was a permanent thing. Too bad.

    Maybe they can bring back the theatre? The theatre was a great movie spot which ran midnight cult special movies from time to time back in the 70's and early 80's. Night out? Grab some hot soup and fresh baked bread at Kiev on 7th Street then walk up a block, get a great egg cream at Gem Spa, cross St. Mark's and duck into the theatre for the midnight showing of Fists of Fury starring Bruce Lee....or some other oddball flick. Second Avenue had some real East Village style back then.

    I remember St. Mark's Cinema, where people would get stoned and watch the midnight showing of Satyricon for the 10th time.

    Yeah, I went there yesterday and it was closed. I guess we have the Verizon stores on Delancey and Broadway only now, eh?
    Avi, the original guy who opened the store was super cool and helped save $$.

    The theater of my youth, sneaking in through the side door with the sun mural to watch Saturday Matinees or those R rated movies you weren't supposed to watch [sorry mom]
