Are these the 6 best East Village bars?

In recent weeks New York Magazine and Grub Street have been publishing a series of best-of listicles.

Yesterday afternoon, they published "the East Village’s most excellent drinking options" from 1 to 6:

1) The Wayland, 700 E. Ninth St. at Avenue C.

2) Lois, 98 Avenue C between Seventh Street and Sixth Street

3) Standings, 43 E. Seventh St. near Second Ave.

4) Jimmy's No. 43, 43 E. Seventh St. near Second Ave.

5) Josie's, 520 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B

6) Mother of Pearl, 95 Avenue A at Sixth Street

Grub Street notes that "the neighborhood’s zip code is home to 585 active liquor licenses," which means there will be plenty of room for debate about this list.

  2. I dunno how $17 drinks at Mother of Pearl makes it on this list. Don't read the article the verbiage diarrhea is offensive.

  3. 11th street is the best bar on the planet, let alone the neighborhood

  4. I like Josies, can be a bit of a weird pool scene, but generally a nice bar, relaxed, right priced, dog friendly. Hopefully this recognition will not change the vibe, I dont think it will.

Weird list, Jimmys and Standings are barely the EV on my map, cool bars, but very niche.

  5. I would have switched nos. 5 and 6, but otherwise, I agree.

  6. Congrats to Jimmy. A great bar, although I liked it better when it was a better kept secret and Phillip was in the kitchen.

And the 11th Street bar still rocks, though it was far superior when they allowed dogs.

  7. Judging by the crowd, 13th Step and Beetle House should be on the top of this list, especially coming from New York Mag.

  8. Weirdly clustered in pairs. Like it was compiled by 3 people and we can tell exactly where they live.

  9. I would advise people not to mention their favorites with an explanation. Do you want to corrupt everything by letting people in on the secret life of dive bars? Please!! Silence about good places should be golden.
