The vegan doughnut shop-cafe opened yesterday at 102 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.
This is the second outpost for the popular East Williamsburg-based shop started in 2011 by friends Christopher Hollowell and Dan Dunbar.
Dunbar told Gothamist last month that the operation here will be very similar to their Brooklyn original, "with their full lineup of vegan doughnuts and pastries like pull-aparts, which they'll shuttle in daily from Montrose Avenue."
Dun-Well also serves coffee drinks (and are hiring a barista).

Understand if ppl dont want to eat animal flesh but what's so bad about a little butter? Absolutely nothin! And don't start with dairy allergies, I'm not talking about those ppl.

Well, conventional doughnuts don't always contain butter, but since you brought it up…most dairy production involves cruelty—from the operation of the dairy farm itself, which creates a huge amount of animal wastes to be disposed of, to the fact that the male calves born to dairy cows need to be taken from their mothers before they're weaned, to be confined in a stall in the dark before they're slaughtered for veal.
That's a whole lotta nothin—so let me just say vegans don't want to have any involvement with the animal-agriculture system. The world is getting too small, and in fact even the UN recommends a vegan diet in order to save the planet from destruction.
But—look on the bright side: more than one scientist has said the human race will be extinct within 100 years anyway. So live it up.
I went by today around 1:30 and it was closed. Boy that was fast. Did Icon buy the building?
ReplyDeleteYeah, it was closed when I went by at 6pm. Their website says they're open until 7pm. Oh well, at least I didn't see the trumpinator.

ReplyDeleteIn other vegan news, the Van Leeuwen vegan flavors are the first vegan ice "creams" I've tried that finally measure up to dairy ice cream in flavor and consistency. Not cheap, though…

I'm a little worried that we don't have to go all the way to Montrose now...these doughnuts are unbelievably good! The chocolate peanut butter and the pistachio are my favorites - delicious and light tasting too somehow!
