Santos Variety Shop is closing on Avenue C
The shop at 77 Avenue C between Fifth Street and Sixth Street will be closing on July 25.
The owner, who is 80, has decided to retire... so for the next few weeks, Santos, which sells various religious artifacts, such as candles, statues and incense, will be unloading its inventory...
The circa-1950s canisters of Saint Mark powdered incense were going for $1.50.

A little more color fades out of the EV...
ReplyDeleteIf their wares are from the 1950s, it's probably safe to say no one shops there. How much will people miss this store? I never even knew it existed.
ReplyDeleteThis is VERY sad. I visited this store OFTEN and the people that worked there were amazing. ALWAYS a kind word and a smile. They don't make places like this anymore. It was a religious version of Little Ricky's and for those of you who moved into a $5,000, one bedroom walkup a few years ago and have no appreciation for the history of a diverse and great neighborhood, you can aways relocate to Bushwick.
