An EVG reader passed along word that the IHOP on East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue closed on Sunday for a "makeover," per the signage ... which promises "A whole new IHOP is coming."
According to the work permit (in the ALL-CAP STYLE OF THE DOB and the NYPD TWEET TOWER):
RENOVATION TO EXISTING EATING AND DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT. SCOPE OF WORK TO INCLUDE MINOR PARTITION WORK, NEW INTERIOR FINISHES, PLUMBING FIXTURES AND MECHANICAL EXHAUST FAN IN PROPOSED TOILET. NO CHANGE OF USE, EGRESS OR OCCUPANCY UNDER.
Looking forward to seeing/hearing the mechanical exhaust fan in proposed toilet.
There isn't any reopening date posted. However, to avoid pancake panic, the sign suggests you visit the next-closest IHOP — on Broadway in Washington Heights.
The East Village IHOP opened for business just about five years ago to the date.
Can someone tell me why that IHOP is such a magnet for homeless folks and really hardcore-looking crusty types? By that I mean extremely ... er, unwashed looking and often very visibly intoxicated? I'm really not trying to judge, just curious what it is about that particular IHOP (and the 7-11 next door) that seems to be such a destination.
ReplyDeleteIt probably has to do with how the building is recessed from the street and has an awning, which could provide temporary shelter from the elements.

ReplyDeleteBack when this IHOP opened, I remember it being busy for the first couple years. I don't walk down this part of 14th street as much as I used too. Is the place more empty now? Is that why they're closing for a makeover? Are they going to try to make it more "NEW YORK" like that weird upscale Denny's in the Financial District?
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't update a location that has been open for 5 years if business was bad or they intended to close in the near future. I remember when this place was about to open. People here screamed boycott and how they'd never go and how it would never work. Well that was accurate wasn't it? Seems they are doing just fine. Id be surprised it they didn't open at least one more location somewhere in Manhattan.
