An EVG reader passes along some encouraging news: The former Cafe Silan space on 10th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue will become a French bakery... and it will be run by the same owners. There's no other info right at the moment.
Cafe Silan, which served a variety of coffee and house-made pastries with natural sweeteners (like silan, a Middle-Eastern date paste), quiety closed back in July after nearly 18 months in business.
We'll update as soon as we learn more about the new venture.
Lemme guess: yet ANOTHER Maison Keyser. If so gimme a !@#$ing break with the chainification of NYC and spare me "Maison Keyser" is great, yeah, well they put individual bakeries out of business and NYC shouldn't be just MKs like it shouldn't be just Starbucks.

ReplyDeleteSorry Anon 12:54 not all chain stores are evil, bad, usw. I won't go into the quality of Maison Keyser--nor mention that they are employing bakers and apprentices. Their products still have the quality of hand-made (home-made). I wish the new incarnation of Cafe Silan well. I wish I could understand why the owners feel that their revamped concept will succeed where the old one didn't.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's not a chain bakery. It's getting so, it's better to live in the hinterlands because at least the rents are cheaper and all the chain stores are the same everywhere anyway.

ReplyDeleteThe almond croissants are great, they also have very nice pastries and tarts. Get more than one because you will eat them all.
