More Mosaic light poles arrive at Astor Place

This morning, two more of Jim Power’s Mosaic Trail light poles were reinstalled at the (not-yet-complete) redesigned Astor Place... seven poles are expected in the final redevelopment... (you can read more abut the pole-restoration project here).

  1. I saw Jim this morning in TSPark on his way over to supervise the installing of his mosaics... he is quite the OG of the EV!

  3. Sorry to say they don't look interesting enough as stand alone art. They need to be part of the lamp post. The hight makes a big difference. Right now, they just don't fit into that Astor horror show.

right! because nothing would fit into that desolate concrete ugly and sterile graveyard. at least the mosaics are being presrved. one tiny little positive step that is not part of the destruction of this neighborhood.

  7. I love the Mosaic Man poles, for years and years. As a 47 year old native New Yorker. But I've often wondered, as a person with inner ear equilibrium issues, if anyone there are any reports of anyone hurting themselves while trying to grab onto one of these while looking for a stable support. Icy conditions, elderly people, or drunken Bros. Tile shards can be very sharp.

  8. PJ, please wear gloves when there are icing conditions and you find yourself in Astor Place, otherwise I have forgotten how nice these pieces are. I'm on the fence regarding standalone art vs functioning lamp post. As art they are wayyyy better than the sterile Haring and Koons sculpture in and outside of the Death Star. They may not be adaptable to the light design of the this "plaza" now and having them as art pieces might safe guard them from future lighting trends and technologies.
