Porchetta has not been open of late on Seventh Street... a note on the door points to repairs here between Avenue A and First Avenue. A tipster told us that business has been slow.
I reached out to co-owners Sara Jenkins and Matt Lindemulder to see what was happening.
Lindemulder confirmed that the Seventh Street location of Porchetta has now officially closed.
"We are not permanently shut just moving. We have not yet found the right location yet but we are exploring a couple of options and are looking forward to getting up and running as soon as possible," he said via email. "One of those options is in the East Village but nothing concrete has materialized."
The quick-serve restaurant, which specializes in Italian-style roast pork sandwiches and platters, opened in 2008. There are plenty of fans. New York magazine called Porchetta’s porchetta "drop-dead delicious, abundantly juicy, aggressively seasoned."
Jenkins also runs Porsena and Extra Bar on Seventh Street between Second Avenue and Cooper Square.
Lots of changes, all of it circles back to greedy landlords, if Union Square Cafe couldn't keep its home when its renewal time, what can?

ReplyDeleteThat is sad. Even though Ive walked past it for six years and never went in, I felt seeing it was a part of my daily routine. Fucking sad.
ReplyDeleteI really hope they relocate in the East Village. This is one of my all time favorite places. The Stage and Porchetta were the best places to pick up dinner after work. PLEASE STAY in the East Village.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, the last time I went there the pork skin in my sandwich was so hard and dry I thought I had bit a piece of bone and almost chipped a tooth - but it was just super dry skin, maybe that's why business is slow.
ReplyDeleteI've been there probably >100 times, but recently the quality of their sandwiches (the porchetta -- I haven't tried anything else) was slipping. Way too fatty and "juicy", which I realize is popular but personally I dont like sandwiches to resemble waterlogged sponges. Still I'll miss all the great sandwiches I had.

ReplyDelete11:45 AM: I was not a regular and I was unimpressed by their sandwich a few a months. Seemed as if they had lost their mojo.
ReplyDeleteAte there about once a month for 5+ years, delicious sandwiches and sides. Loved it and will miss it. Sad to see small unique spots like this die out in the East Village.
