Updated (POSTPONED): The 'Alamo Cube Ribbon Cutting Ceremony' scheduled for tomorrow
[The pinhole filter]
The weekly Astor Place Reconstruction newsletter (h/t to the EVG reader for this one), distributed back on Friday, notes The Alamo Cube Ribbon Cutting Ceremony taking place this week... specifically tomorrow (Tuesday!) at 9:30 a.m. ...

Of course, this may not actually happen. The advisories stated the return of the Alamo several times this past summer and in September. The refurbished cube returned on Nov. 1. For now, until presumably the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the sculpture remains behind barricades. Per a sign at the scene: "there remains a final phase of onsite restoration needed." Then! "Once complete, the barricades will be removed."
Updated 6:30 p.m.
Due to inclement weather expected tomorrow (Tuesday!), the ribbon-cutting ceremony has been postponed until Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

They always lovingly have the community in mind. You know it because they say it. And demonstrate it by holding ribbon cutting ceremonies at 9:30AM on a random Tuesday when the community is working. Couldn't risk the local ruffians rubbing elbows with the leadership of the Astor Axis of Evil, Chase and The Sculpture for Failure. After all, the great visionaries who dreamed up sarcophagus seating and disposable avenue islands - all these community treasures over schedule and over budget - can only give so much. Mini cookies for all on this historic day!

ReplyDeleteAh, NOTORIOUS, would that it were for the community, instead of just being a photo op for a bunch of self-congratulatory gladhanding politicos. You can't expect them to factor the hoi polloi in too, can you? After all, we might defile them purty benches with our plebian asses, or mock their wee, twee foodstuffs, classless louts that we are. Can't be having that!
ReplyDeleteNothing anyone can do or propose will satisfy everyone--and that certainly includes notorious EV Grieve contributors. I confess, I am retired, and I have lived in the neighborhood since before the Alamo was installed so I will stop by. I didn't like it when it was first placed in Astor Place (like Paul Thek I thought it too hard for the space--that the space could use something less brutal), but I have grown to admire it as an integral part of the community. And if people like Notorious did show up, I am sure he / she would have nothing but unrelenting attacks on how the ceremony was executed. Just be glad that it is back, that they haven't done anything horrible to it (like the shinning lights someone once assured us were to be part of its presentation). I could do without the pink food stand (ugly).
ReplyDelete3:30PM - Your perception of the Alamo as being brutal is spot-on, but at this point it only mirrors the brutality that surrounds it. When I walk through there now I know I am being watched.
ReplyDeleteWasn't the date November 1, instead of October 1?
ReplyDeleteThanks ruby girl — you are correct. I fixed my mistake.
