The Sock Man opens in new location on St. Mark's Place today
[Photo the other day by Derek Berg]
The new location of the Sock Man opens today at 99 1/2 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue. (Hours are noon to 10 p.m.)
A rent increase forced the Sock Man (aka Marty Rosen) to close his longtime shop at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue back in January. Rosen had been peddling socks, tights, lingerie and other accessories in this space since 1983. (Landlord Raphael Toledano, who took possession in September 2015, is now flipping the building.)
Very good to see the Sock Man back in business.

ReplyDeleteWho is that masked woman?
ReplyDeleteI've seen her around for years. I believe she used to work at one of the Ricky's.
DeleteShe worked for Sockman when he was located at 18 St Mark's Place.
DeleteSocks rock
ReplyDeleteWe love you Marty. All the best.
ReplyDeleteThey've had the space for a while. Always get worried when it takes retail a while to open but GO SOCK MAN. I bought a pair in '83, I'll buy a pair in 2016.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back!
ReplyDeleteJust in time for the cold weather sock man. Mazeltov.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are back.

Nope, she used to work at "Love saves the day". she's a sweetheart, seeing her makes me have hope for "weird" NYC

ReplyDeleteFinally- some good news for the neighborhood. Welcome back man.
ReplyDeleteThat's a V. Stiviano style visor, very chic among NBA groupies.

That's Cat. I first met her when I lived on the "unfortunate block" that is St. Mark's between 2nd and 3rd.
She's a friend of mine. Her name is Meow.
ReplyDeleteWait, so her name is both Cat AND Meow? So she's the Cat's Meow.
ReplyDeleteI have known Meow since the 1970's.
ReplyDeleteShe is a good woman and a truly good friend.
Tell the truth, that photo had nothing to do with my re-opening. It's just a coincidence that she was in front of my store. You can tell because the old sign is still in the window, which I took down after opening.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Sock Man!! You were sorely missed. I've bought tights from you for every major event of at least the last 20 yrs of my life, plus "daily" tights. Accept no substitute! ¡Viva La Sock Man! Lurex glitter tights and open weave fishnets forever!
