The scoop on the former Sock Man space on St. Mark's Place

The for rent sign is down at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Workers at the scene told EVG correspondent Steven that an independent ice cream shop will be opening in the space later this spring. That's all we know about it at the moment.

Until Jan. 16, the storefront was home for 30-plus years to The Sock Man.

$7 a scoop. Welcome to St.Marks! It's gluten free and lactose free and vegan! No, the cow is vegan. Its gourmet, italiano or dutch or japanese. And the workers are vegan. $10 a scoop for free range cow ice cream. $15 a scoop fat free gourmet lactose free vegetable flavored only pure natural ice cream.

You can wear the ice cream on your feet.

Hey, Van Leeuwen is $7 a scoop; what's your point? You can have full-fat dairy ice cream and still pay through the nose for it.

A business which lasted 30 years will be replaced by a business which will last 30 weeks.

I wonder if this shoppe will announced where the milk is sourced from as well as any cherries, pistachio nuts, walnuts, (you supply the item). One can only wonder at (or should it be admire) the business acumen of people prepared to invest in such an enterprise. Or, is this a cover for yet another bar?

Oh for the love of God. Another wasted space in the EV designed only for the transients.

Wandered around Greenwich Village the other day and the area around MacDougal and Bleecker is filled with dessert places -- I CE NY, Dessert Kitchen, by Chloe -- and sheeple are lining up for it. This is what's happening at St. Mark's Pl.

The infantilization of lower Manhattan continues.

Fuck this place which must know it is moving into a place which was a St.Mark's Place/East Village institution.

Gimme a vanilla ice cream sandwich in an orange/blue/white wrapper from a bodega any day over this shit (btw where can I get that 100 calorie bar of goodness nowadays?)

A brief history of ice cream on St. Mark's Place (at least since 1980):

Lickety Split—where I remember getting a cone back in 1980, anyway. They became Pravinie, which I believe lasted at least through the 90s.

Dojo Restaurant started on St. Mark's in a tiny storefront as a psychedelic ice-cream parlor with flavors like Acapulco Gold and Panama Red. Am I the only person who remembers this? I doubt it.

I know there have been others before and since, but these stand out in my memory.
